EVANSVILLE, ILL. – The women's tennis team will be sending six players to the finals in singles play and three doubles teams tomorrow. The Salukis won every single match in day two, and now will have a chance at eight Missouri Valley Conference titles.
The day started with flawless doubles play from the Southern Illinois, winning all four matches. Meaghan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao advanced to the No. 2 finals with an 8-6 win. The duo is now a perfect 6-0 this season. The other two teams that are playing in the finals will be competing for the same title. Pairs Tereza Klocova and Polina Dozortseva, and Athena Chrysanthou and Yana Golovkina, both picked up wins today in the No. 3 doubles bracket and will face off tomorrow in the championships. The final doubles duo that won today was Ana Sofia Cordero and Xiwei Cai. After suffering a day one loss the pair has won two straight to win fifth place in the No. 1 doubles bracket. The loss in the first round is only the second loss the team has suffered all season.
In singles play SIU was dominant in every bracket. The Salukis went 8-1, the only loss coming from a matchup that featured Vitoria Beirao against Caroline Taty in the No. 7 singles bracket. The eight wins have put SIU in contention for five singles titles, the most ever in Saluki history. Seniors Cordero, Monaghan, and Dozortseva will all be playing in an individual title match tomorrow after going a perfect, 2-0 in their matches in Evansville. Joining them tomorrow will be Klocova, Beirao, and 2015 MVC Individual Champion Golovkina.
"It's the most we have ever had in the finals and we have to show up with the confidence tomorrow," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Today we were perfect. I am so proud of how we are growing individually and as a team."
Championship Monday will kick off with the doubles finals at 9 a.m. and singles will follow. To follow along and for all information on the MVC Individual Championships click here.
