MARTIN, Tenn. – Four Salukis scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as UT Martin (2-5) used an 8-0 fourth quarter run to sink the Southern Illinois women's basketball team (3-3), 76-68, Tuesday night at the Elam Center.
Senior forward Kim Nebo led the way for the Salukis with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds. Senior guard Carlie Corrigan added 14 points and five boards, while junior guard Kylie Giebelhausen finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Rishonda Napier rounded out the Saluki scorers in double figures, as she tallied 10 points.
The Salukis took a 63-61 lead with 6:59 to play in regulation on a fast break layup by freshman guard Brittney Patrick. SIU's offense went cold though, as the Skyhawks held Southern scoreless over the next four minutes of play and built an eight-point lead (71-63) with a 10-0 spurt.
"You have to give a lot of credit to UT Martin," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "They played a good game. I felt like we played really well in spurts. We just had a lot of turnovers and fouls when we didn't need them."
Southern turned the ball over 14 times, with 10 of those turnovers coming in the first half. SIU also struggled to take advantage of second chances, as the Salukis grabbed 15 offensive rebounds but only scored eight points off of those points.
The Salukis assisted on 17 of 27 field goals, a testament to SIU's ability to find the open shooter.
"Our chemistry has been very good," Stein said. "Tt's something that we continue to work for. With these young kids, we just have to get them more and more time."
After the underclassmen scored 69 of SIU's 104 points in the win over Brescia on Nov. 26, the upperclassmen did most of the heavy lifting against UT Martin, accounting for 56 of SIU's 68 points.
UT Martin's bench outscored Southern's, 24-to-6, with SIU's bench shooting just 3-of-11. The Skyhawk reserves were led by Breanna Boggs, who finished with 17 points and seven boards off the bench.
The Salukis will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they host UAB. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
