Women's tennis falls to Stetson, 5-2, on Tuesday

DeLand, Fla. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team lost against Stetson today, 5-2. The loss makes three in a row for the Salukis as they move to 8-7 on the season.
SIU started off strong against the Hatters, winning two quick doubles matches. Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero continued their winning streak from the No. 1 spot, earning a 6-1 win over their opponents. The pair has won six of their last seven scored matches. Yana Golovkina and Athena Chrysanthou also won from No. 3 spot, helping the Salukis earn a 1-0 advantage with the doubles point.
The Salukis were unable to continue the momentum in singles play, however. After losing three straight matches at the No. 2, No. 6 and No. 1 spots, the team earned a win from Katie Fries in the No. 5 singles spot, 6-4, 6-1. Fries, now 12-7 in singles play in her debut season, was the only Saluki to win in singles. Stetson went on to win the final two singles matches, closing out the match, 5-2.
"We came out on fire in two of our doubles matches today, but in singles we just couldn't get comfortable out there," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Stetson played strong and really commanded the courts. We need to get more comfortable with the pace of outdoor courts and work on building the points better."
The Salukis will have the next three days off before taking on North Florida on Saturday. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
