CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois started conference play on a high note, sweeping Evansville 7-0, for its second straight sweep at home.
The Salukis snapped a five-match losing streak with today's win against Evansville, bringing their overall record to 9-9, and 1-0 in conference play. The Salukis started off strong in doubles, winning all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
The squad took a 1-0 lead into singles play, where the Salukis continued with momentum from doubles. All six Salukis won in two sets against their respective opponents. Both Athena Chrysanthou and Ana Sofia Cordero have 10 singles wins, the first two Salukis to get to double-digit wins this year.
"When you start conference in April its like you start at 0-0," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "It's a fresh start to your season. It was a windy day, but the ladies played well and were determined today."
The shutout victory is SIU's fifth of the season, and is the team's fifth win at home this year. The team's next match will be a week from Saturday against Bradley at 10 a.m. in Peoria.
