Salukis win again, remaining undefeated in conference play

Carbondale, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team kept its hot streak going with its fourth-straight conference win, defeating Northern Iowa, 7-0. The Salukis improved their overall record to 12-9.
The team started off hot in doubles play, jumping out to an early lead in all three contests. Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero rode their early momentum to a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot, giving the Salukis the early upper hand. But UNI would quickly answer, winning a match of their own, tying things up a 1-1. The Salukis would go on to win the No. 3 matchup in dramatic fashion, 7-5, earning SIU the doubles point.
Moving to singles play with a 1-0 lead over the Panthers, the Salukis came out with intensity on every court. SIU was led by three players that have yet to lose a Missouri Valley match: Cordero, Katie Fries, and Polina Dozortseva. The three players are now 4-0 in conference matches. All six Salukis won their match in straight sets.
"Great win against this team," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "We had some tight matches in doubles, but we showed some great composure in our singles matches. It was a great team effort."
The shutout victory was the second-consecutive home sweep for the Salukis, and the team's sixth sweep of the season. The victory moves SIU's home record to 6-1.
Tomorrow's match against Drake is the final home match of the 2015-16 season, starting at 10 a.m. This is looking for the fourth consecutive year the team has not lost at home more than once during the course of the season. There will be breakfast and lunch provided for all that attend, in honor of ‘Fan Appreciation Day', at University Courts.
