Salukis fall to Wichita State, losing first conference match

WITICHA, Kan. - Southern Illinois University lost to No. 26 Wichita State, 7-0, in the team's second to last match of the season. The Salukis fall to second place in the conference at 5-1 against MVC opponents with one match to play.
SIU started the match by winning one of three doubles matches, with Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero winning, 7-6, at the No. 1 spot. The pair now has ten doubles wins on the season. No. 2 and 3 doubles were able to bring some energy from the match against Kansas State yesterday, but were unable to carry it throughout the set. SIU lost doubles point, to trail 1-0 heading into singles.
All six singles matches were won by Wichita State in two straight sets, giving Katie Fries, Ana Sofia Cordero, and Polina Dozortseva their first conference losses this season. It had been over one year since SIU's last conference shutout loss, and over a month since the team has been completely shutout in a match.
"Huge win for our No. 1 doubles," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Good effort today from everyone, but to beat a team this good everyone has to play on the top of their game."
The Salukis will conclude their regular season tomorrow at Missouri State, beginning at 10 a.m.
