Women's tennis advances to second round

WICHITA, Kan. - Southern Illinois University took down the University of Northern Iowa in the first round of the Missouri Valley Championships, 4-0, marking the second time this season SIU has shut out the Panthers. The Salukis advance to the second round, where they will play Drake University.
The day did not start as planned for SIU, as the weather pushed their match inside and the start time up two hours. However, the Salukis were not phased. The team clinched the match after the first four singles matches finished. Wins from Polina Dozortseva, Xiwei Cai, Meagan Monaghan and Katie Fries were all the team needed to sweep its first-round opponent. All four Salukis won in straight sets.
The Salukis have now won their first match at the championships for the past eight years. SIU's match tomorrow is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at Crestview Country Club. For more information about the MVC Tennis championships and to see the full bracket, click here.
