The Saluki women's golf season continues with two events in the next five days. On Saturday, Southern will play at the UIC Fall Invite, a one-day event. On Tuesday the Salukis will make the short trip from Lemont, Illinois to Flossmoor, Illinois for the Loyola Chicago Rambler Invitational.
Â
Southern won both tournaments last season and head coach Alexis Mihelich said that the team is poised to put together its first really good performance of the year.
Â
"Hannah, Alice and Brooke are kind of on a roll and I think they'll keep it up," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "Were just waiting for another player to break through. I think we're really close."
Â
Mihelich's travel team will change just slightly for the week's tournaments. Alice Ho, Brooke Cusumano, Hannah Netisingha and Sun Jung will remain in the team while Kristie Yang will make the first appearance of her senior year. Yang is replacing Xianmei Jin in this week's travel team. Jin will miss the remainder of the fall season with a dislocated shoulder.
Â
First SIU will play in the UIC Fall Invite at Cog Hill No. 2 in Lemont, Illinois. The tournament has just five teams competing and lasts just one round. Cog Hill No. 2, also known as the Ravines course, plays at a par of 72.
Â
Last year at the UIC Fall Invite Southern turned in a first place finish as well as a 1-2 finish from Hannah Netisingha and Brooke Cusumano. The victory was the first of Netisingha's career. Yang finished tied for eighth at last year's event.
Â
Mihelich said she expects Netisingha, who is from nearby Carol Stream, Illinois, to play well at two courses that are familiar to her.
Â
In the second tournament, the Loyola Chicago Rambler Invitational, the Salukis will play three rounds against a larger field than the one at UIC.
Â
The Loyola Rambler Chicago Invitational will be played at Flossmoor Country Club in Flossmoor, Illinois. Mihelich said the course can play tough and is known for its very fast greens and thick rough.
Â
"Flossmoor is right next to Olympia Fields Country Club and Olympia Fields has hosted major championships," Mihelich said. "Homewood Floosmoor is pretty much the same grass. The same layout. They're similar courses. It's a great competition track. It's tough. You've got to keep the ball out of the rough because you'll need your short irons to stop on those fast greens."
Â
This is another event that SIU had a lot of success at last year. As a team, the Salukis won the event and had two golfers that returned for the 2016-17 season place in the top-10. Jung finished tied for third and Cusumano was tied for seventh. Mihelich said the this is a course that Jung played really well at last year and was excited to learn that they will play there again this year.
Â
The busy week for the women's golf team kicks off on Saturday at the UIC Fall Invite in Lemont, Illinois.
