The Salukis will kick off their fall season by welcoming four teams to Carbondale
CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program kicks off their fall schedule with its very own tournament, the Saluki Fall Classic. SIU will be welcoming Arkansas State, Eastern Illinois, Southeast Missouri and Western Illinois to town for a one-day tournament on Sunday, September 18.
This season, the women's tennis program is bringing back eight players from its Missouri Valley Conference second-place team a season ago. The squad went 16-12, with a 6-1 conference record.
"I think we really set the standards high for them because a lot of our team are returners," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Everything is very familiar to the team, so, it doesn't really feel like the beginning of the year for us. I'm very impressed with where we are right now."
The five-team tournament is the biggest invite Anderson has ever hosted here at SIU. In past years, the classic has been a three-team dual, which is completed in one day.
"Everything kind of fell into place," Anderson said. "We were able to pick up Western and Eastern as a package deal, and then we were able to add SEMO. I'm looking forward to all the teams being here on our turf."
Because of the size of this year's tournament and the little of amount of time, it will have a different setup then in years past. All teams will start with doubles play, then each competing player will be grouped into pools based on their coaches' suggestions and the player's world tennis ranking (WTR), making the tournament as competitive as possible. All ten SIU players are set to compete.
The classic is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., with a warm up at 8 a.m., at University Courts next to the football field.
