Salukis Head To Notre Dame Invitational
09/29/2016 | 6:15:00 | Cross Country
The Southern Illinois cross country teams will compete in the Gold portion of the Blue & Gold race hosted by Notre Dame on Friday. Southern will run against five other Missouri Valley Conference schools in that group, which includes the men's and women's teams from Indiana State, Illinois State, Loyola, Northern Iowa, and the women's team from Bradley.
First-year cross country head coach Kevin Cataldo, who set personal best times at the meet during his athletic career at Oakland University, says a key to competing against the high level of competition is to steady the pace.
"It can be really fast, " Cataldo said. "One thing we're telling the athletes to focus on is running your race, being patient, and not having a sense of urgency right away."
Sophomore Josh Maier has been the standout among Saluki runners so far this season. The Alsip, Ill. native notched a pair of individual victories in Southern's first two races. The two wins were the first of his collegiate career.
"We have a team full of competitors," Cataldo said. "We have people who want to compete and are willing to put in the work, and I think that speaks volumes about SIU cross country and track & field."Â
SIU has not participated in the Notre Dame meet since 2014. That year, the Saluki men put up a valiant effort, finishing third and placing three runners in the top five, while the women's team finished 16th.Â
The Gold portion of the meet begins with the women's 5K race starting at 4:15 p.m. while the men follow suit in the 8K race at 5 p.m.
