CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team will be leaving Carbondale this weekend for their first road matches of the season. The University of Tennessee Chattanooga is holding a six-team tournament Friday and Saturday, and will be welcoming in Mercer, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee State, and Eastern Kentucky, along with SIU.
"I really like when we play schools that we don't play very often," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "It really gets the girls to focus not on the drama of the match. Because once you get out of the conference you'll find these types of tournaments a lot more relaxing, and really prepare your team for Conference competition."
The team has had the last two weeks off since the Saluki Fall Classic. SIU claimed eight total titles in the one-day tournament, most notably winning four out of the five possible doubles brackets. The experience of the squad showed, but the set up of this week's tournament will present new challenges.
"We've been working on our team camaraderie these past few weeks, to keep the girls level headed in the matches. The way this tournament is set up will help us continue to build on our team chemistry and prepare us for competition down the line and into the spring season."
Eight players will travel to compete in this week's tournament. The lineup for the team will be adjusted slightly giving a few players that were toward the bottom at the Saluki Fall Classic tougher competition. But, Anderson stressed in practice not to worry about where you played in the lineup. The top eight players on the team are all strong; the different lineup is just a rearrangement of leadership.
The tournament is set to start at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Champions Club courts in Chattanooga and will conclude on Saturday in the afternoon.
