EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team couldn't erase an 11-point fourth quarter deficit despite a late comeback attempt at Evansville Sunday afternoon, falling to the Purple Aces, 63-60 inside the Ford Center.
After trailing for the entirety of the contest, the Salukis (8-10, 2-5 MVC) had a chance to send the game to overtime on their final possession. Rishonda Napier, who nailed a three-pointer to get Southern to within one with :51 seconds remaining, got a clean look at a NBA-range three-pointer but her game-tying attempt clanged off the back iron as time expired.
"I felt really good about the fact that we put ourselves in a position to be able to tie the game up on the last possession in the closing seconds," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "Being as bad defensively as we were and hitting a low percentage shooting-wise, just to be in the ball game you have to give our kids a lot of credit for being in that position."
Southern struggled out of the gate against the Purple Aces (8-10, 3-4 MVC). The Salukis missed their first 11 shots from downtown and made just 22.8% (8-of-35) of their attempts from the field in the first half. SIU however, did close the second quarter on a 10-2 run to get to within two, 24-22.
The Salukis got to within two points of the lead on three separate occasions in the second half, but could never get the defensive stop it needed to complete the comeback.
"I felt like we had some really good looks at the basket, but just couldn't get anything to drop," Stein said. "The key today was that we didn't play very good defense. We played good defense in spurts, but they got to the basket too easy."
The Purple Aces were especially effective when finishing at the rim, as 18 of their 24 field goals came in the paint. Overall, the home team shot 44.4% (24-of-54) from the field.
Three Salukis scored in double figures, led by Giebelhausen. The East Peoria, Ill. native tallied her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and a steal. Kim Nebo finished with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Carlie Corrigan scored all 10 of her points in the second half and added four rebounds and two assists.
The Salukis are back in action Friday, Jan. 27 when they travel to Peoria, Ill. to take on the Bradley Braves. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
