Salukis have won four-straight against the Braves
The Southern Illinois women's basketball team travels to Peoria, Ill. Friday, Jan. 27 to tangle with the Bradley Braves. Southern has won four-straight over the Braves, and are 5-1 against Bradley under fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed using the WatchESPN app or by clicking here.Â
Series History
The Salukis and the Braves will meet for the 72nd time in a rivalry that dates back to 1983. Southern leads the all-time series, 46-25. SIU went a 12-year, 21-game stretch, from 1983-1995 without a loss to Bradley, running off a 36-2 record through the 2000-01 season. The Braves returned the favor winning 22 of the next 27 games. Southern has won four-straight over Bradley, having completed back-to-back season sweeps a year ago for the first time since the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons. The Salukis are 5-1 against the Braves under head coach Cindy Stein.
Current Salukis vs. the Braves
Rishonda Napier comes into Friday's contest averaging 13.3 points, 4.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in six career meetings against the Braves. Kylie Giebelhausen, who hails from East Peoria, Ill., averages 8.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in four career meetings, which included 15 points and 3 boards at the Renaissance Coliseum a year ago. In four games against the Braves, Kim Nebo is averaging 6.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest. Last season, Nebo recorded her first career double-double vs. Bradley, as she scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and narrowly tallied another the second time the two teams played. She scored 9 points and tied a career-high with 15 boards in the 65-51 win.
Nice to see you again
Andrea Gorski spent three seasons, from 2013-16, as SIU's associate head coach under Cindy Stein. She was part of the largest single-season turnaround in program history, as well as SIU's first postseason appearance since 2007. As a player, Gorski was winless (0-9) against the Salukis, as she ran up against some of the best teams in Saluki history, which included the 1991-92 Salukis that won the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament game. Cindy Stein was also an assistant coach at Bradley from 1988-93.
In a club by herself
Kylie Giebelhausen reached 700 career points and became the only Saluki with at least 700 points/90 blocks/150 assists/70 steals/300 rebounds. The junior from East Peoria, Ill. has reached double-digits in 13 of SIU's 18 games this season and most recently recorded her second career double-double (11 points/10 rebounds) against Evansville.Â
No. 600
SIU head coach Cindy Stein will coach her 600th career game Friday at Bradley, the most of any active Valley coach. Missouri State's Kellie Harper is second, having coached 411 career games. Stein's 332 career wins are also the most of any active Valley coach.
Climbing up the ranks
Rishonda Napier has made 248 career three-pointers, the most in school history and tied for the 13th-most in Missouri Valley Conference history. With her next trey she will pass Michelle Nason (WIU/Bradley) for sole possession of 13th place. With two made three-pointers she can become just the 13th player in MVC history to make 250-plus three-pointers. Dayna Finch of Creighton holds the all-time Valley record, having made 294 3-balls from 2001-04.
Points-Assists Double-Doubles
There have been 22 points-assists double-doubles in school history, most recently when Rishonda Napier posted 18 points and 11 assists in Southern's win over Wichita State on Jan. 13. Napier is one of only four Salukis to have recorded multiple points-assists double-doubles in the same season, joining D.D. Plab, Cartaesha Macklin and Nikki Gilmore in having done so. Gilmore holds the school record with three points-assists double-doubles during the 1993-94 season. The Burbank, Calif. native is one of seven Salukis to record multiple points-assists double-doubles in a career, and Napier's 18 points in the win over the Shockers are tied for the fifth-most points scored by a Saluki in a game in which that same player dished out double-digit assists. The Salukis are 15-7 all-time in games where they have a player record a points-assists double-double.Â

Assists-Rebounds Double-Double
Holly Teague recorded the only assists-rebounds double-double in school history in a 65-71 loss to Indiana State on Jan. 17, 2002. Teague finished one point shy of a triple-double, as she had 9 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. It's the closest a Saluki has ever come to a triple-double.
10-plus assists in a single game
Rishonda Napier has recorded 11 assists twice in a game this season. It marked the 36th and 37th time in school history a player has dished out double-digit assists, and Napier became the 19th different Saluki to do so. Her 11 assists are the seventh-most in a single game in program history, while SIU holds a .540 winning percentage (20-17) in games in which a Saluki dishes out 10-plus assists.
Welcome Back
Nicole Martin returned the starting lineup against Evansville after being one of the first off the bench for Coach Stein during Southern's previous four contests. The Jefferson City, Mo. made her presence felt, as she tied her career-best for offensive rebounds with five and finished with six points and six boards in 26 minutes.
4 from 200 career assists
Kylie Giebelhausen comes into the weekend 22nd in school history with 196 career assists. With three assists she will pass current Illinois Central College head coach Karrie Redeker for 21st on Southern's all-time list, and can crack the top-20 in school history with nine assists.
Different Look
Kim Nebo came off the bench for just the second time this season against Evansville, and was one of three Salukis to score in double figures. The Katy, Texas product scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. It marks the second time this season, and the fourth time in her career, that Nebo has come off the bench and scored in double figures.
Making the most of her opportunities
Kristen Nelson went 2-for-3 from behind the arc and has made 72.2% (13-of-18) of her three-pointers this season, including a streak earlier this season in which she made eight-straight without a miss. The school record for three-point shooting percentage in a season is 44.7%, set by Erin Pauk in 2007-08. By NCAA standards, a three-point shooter has to average at least two attempts per contest to be ranked in the nation in the category, but Southern's top-10 all-time list is a bit more forgiving. Anita Scott, for instance, shot 41.3% from three-point range during the 1992-93 season, the fourth-best mark in school history, despite the fact she only attempted 46 three-pointers all season- or just over 1.58 per game.
Dishing out helpers
Rishonda Napier is currently averaging 4.7 assists per game this season, second only to Drake's Caitlyn Ingle for highest average in the Valley. If Napier's average holds, it would be the ninth-highest in a single-season in school history, and the most since Stephany Neptune averaged 5.0 assists per game during the 2009-10 season.
Clocking Minutes
Brittney Patrick played a career-high 26 minutes against Evansville on Jan. 22, and the Bolingbrook, Ill. native has appeared in 17 of SIU's 18 games this season.Â
Uncharted Territory
The Salukis have made 10-plus three-pointers in seven games, including an active streak of four-straight games with 10 or more. Both are school records, as SIU's seven games this season with 10-plus three-pointers is more than the previous four seasons combined. Southern has made an average of 7.8 three-pointers per game this season, well above the school record of 6.67 set last year.Â
During head coach Cindy Stein's 20 seasons as a head coach, her teams, on average, shoot 473.3 three-pointers, making nearly 151.6 per season. Interestingly enough, the 2015-16 Salukis made (220) and attempted (663) the most three-pointers of any Stein helmed team. The 2016-17 squad is on-pace to crush both totals, as they are 142-of-395 (.359) from downtown through 18 games.
Time is on her side
Rishonda Napier sits at 3,718 career minutes, the second-most in school history. She is second to Cartaesha Macklin, who became the first Saluki to reach the 4,000-minutes played mark last year and finished her career having played 4,088 career minutes.
