The SIU Women's Golf team took home a big win at the Chicago State Chi-Town Classic on Tuesday.
Â
As a team, the Dawgs finished first for the second week in a row, with an overall score of 614. They were 31 strokes ahead of second place Illinois-Chicago.
Â
SIU's score of 614 tied it for 15th for all-time low 36-hole scores.
Â
Senior Hanna Netisingha placed first in the tournament, with a two-round score of 148, four-strokes over par. It is her first individual win of the season and second of her career.
Â
Netisngha's 70 in the first round tied her for eighth in all-time low 18-hole scores and was the second best opening round score in Southern's history
Â
Head Coach Alexis O'Brien said Netisingha really prevailed on the course the past two days. She kept her game together in rough conditions.
Â
Freshman Emilyee McGiles was two strokes behind Netisingha, at six-over par. McGiles took home second place for the Salukis. Sophomore Erica Kerr, who played as an individual, took home fourth place.
Â
All six Salukis who attended the tournament, finished within the top-20.
Â
Senior Alice Ho finished sixth, freshman Moyea Russell finished tied for seventh with Jennifer Kim from UIC, and Lili Klekner-Alt finished 13th. 16 strokes separated Klekner-Alt and Netisingha.
Â
"Our team is pretty deep talent wise and we are long hitters," O'Brien said. "When conditions get tough the wind doesn't affect our scoring."
Â
The win comes at a good time for the Salukis as they get ready for the Missouri Valley Conference preview next week.
Â
It will be the first time the Dawgs will get to play all of the MVC teams this season. SIU finished fifth at the MVC preview last year.
Â
The MVC Preview will take place on October 16-17 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas.
