
Maier, Krolak lead Salukis at NCAA Pre-Nationals

The Southern Illinois cross country teams closed out the regular season at NCAA Pre-Nationals, hosted the University of Louisville.Â
Josh Maier and Megan Krolak again led the way for the Salukis. Maier finished 16th with a season-best 8K time, while Krolak cut nearly 30 seconds off her previous-best 6K time to place 18th.
The Saluki men finished 18th out of 24 teams, as Ohio State won the men's team title with 103 points. BYU (112), Oregon (117), Virginia Tech (169) and Bowling Green (215) rounded out the top-five.Â
The Saluki women finished 22nd out of 29 teams, as Nevada won the black 6K with 62 points. BYU was second with 96 points, while Michigan (170), Arkansas (173) and Ohio (219) rounded out the top-five.
Maier paced the Saluki men with a 16th place finish in the 8K race, as he finished with a time of 24:40. Maier's time Saturday was more than a minute faster than his 8K time from the Commodore Classic on Sept. 16 in which the Alsip, Ill. native ran 25:54 to finish 29th.
Cain Hassim cut more than a minute and half off his official season-best 8K time, as he ran 25:35 to finish 58th. Jonathan Vara cut more than 30 seconds off his previous-best 8K time at 26:15, while Jacob DeWit trimmed 25 seconds off his previous-best time at 26:15 to finish 102nd and 103rd, respectively.Â
Krolak finished 18th with a time of 21:34.9 to lead the Saluki women. Kelly O'Shea ran 22:40.5 to finish 89th, while Claire Darnell ran 23:00.6 to finish 114th. Hillary Merrill (157th, 23:46.8), Sasha Lanning (164th, 23:57.3)
