Maier was also the recipient of the league's Elite 17 Award.
Southern Illinois redshirt junior Josh Maier earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after he finished fourth at the 2017Â MVC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Missouri State.
Â
Maier ran at the front of the pack for most of the race and made his move over the last 3,000 meters. He finished in a time of 24:45.64 and was less than seven seconds behind Bradley's Jake Hoffert, who won with a time of 24:37.87.
Â
Maier, who placed 13th a year ago to earn All-MVC Honorable Mention, earned his first All-MVC first-team honor and became the 29th Saluki in program history to post back-to-back all-conference finishes.
Â
The Alsip, Ill. native also was named the conference's Elite 17Â award recipient, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the MVC's 17 team championships. Including track and field, it marks the third time Maier has taken home the award.
Â
The Saluki men finished sixth overall 136 points. Bradley won on a tiebreaker, as the Braves edged out Indiana State to take home the team title. Illinois State (88), Loyola (93) and Drake (103) rounded out the top-five.
Â
SIU's women's team finished seventh in the team standings. Claire Darnell was the top-finisher for the Salukis as she came in 19th place in 18:09.08, followed by Megan Krolak in 24th in 18:11.03.
Â
Bradley made it a sweep of the MVC team titles with a convincing win in the women's race as the Braves' top-five runners finished fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Northern Iowa was second with 56 points, followed by Loyola with 93 points. Indiana State (104) and Missouri State (122) rounded out the top-five.
Â
Loyola's Lindsey Brewis became the first female Rambler to win a Valley Cross Country title since Loyola joined the MVC in 2013.
Â
The Salukis continue their season Nov. 10 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship in Ames, Iowa.
