The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to the Drake Bulldogs, 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 25-16) in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday evening inside the Knapp Center.
Five Salukis had at least seven kills, including 13 from senior outside hitter Andrea Estrada. The Bogota, Colombia native also had 15 digs for her 51st career double-double. Senior middle hitter Kolby Meeks hit .533, as she put down nine kills on 15 attempts and added five block assists. Junior middle hitter Patience Brown hit .421 with eight kills, no errors to go along with six block assists. SIU, as a team, finished with 11 total blocks which marked the sixth time this season, and second time in MVC play, that the Salukis have tallied 10-plus blocks.
Sophomore setter Alayna Martin tallied her third-straight double-double with 24 assists and a team-best 16 digs while freshman setter Rachel Maguire totaled 15 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero Ashley Edelen chipped in four assists and 13 digs.
The Salukis (4-15, 3-5) were at their best in the third set, as they hit .333 and never trailed in the 25-16 win. Southern opened a 14-9 lead on a kill by Nellie Fredriksson and back-to-back kills by Alysa Sutton helped build SIU's lead to seven, 20-13. Estrada put down the final two kills of the frame to seal the set three victory.
Southern struggled early in the first set, as it hit just .062 in the opening frame. Maggie Nedoma got SIU to within one with her first kill, 11-10, but that was as close as the Salukis could get.Â
SIU put down 14 kills in the second set, but the Bulldogs defense forced the Salukis out of system to the tune of six attack errors. Southern led by two early on a block by Fredriksson and Meeks that made it 9-7, while a pair Nedoma kills kept the lead at two, 13-11. The Bulldogs caught the Salukis in a rotation and rattled off six-straight points to build a 17-13 lead that they never relinquished.
The Salukis tied set four, 10-10 on a kill by Meeks, but the Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run to open up a 20-13 lead that held up.
SIU returns home on Friday, Oct. 20 to host the Illinois State Redbirds. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
