Andrea Estrada finished with 20 kills and 14 digs for her 52nd career double-double.
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to Illinois State, 3-2 (18-25, 26-24, 25-22, 11-25, 13-15), Friday evening inside Davies Gym.
The Salukis (4-16, 3-6 MVC) fell in the opening set, 25-18, but rebounded with a 26-24 set two win and followed by taking set three, 25-22. Facing defeat, the Redbirds dominated the fourth set, 25-11 to force a fifth set. Once there, the Redbirds got out to an early 9-3 lead and hung on, 15-13, to take the match.
"We had our ups and downs early, but we really battled in the early sets and even in the fifth set," first-year head coach Kari Thompson said. "We followed a better defensive game plan then when we played (Illinois State) the first time. We didn't necessarily slow down their offense, but we made some digs and gave our offense options."
Redshirt senior Andrea Estrada totaled a season-high 20 kills. It marks the sixth time in her career that she has finished with 20-plus kills in a single match. Seniors Kolby Meeks and Nellie Fredriksson, junior Patience Brown and freshman Maggie Nedoma each added seven kills. Sophomore Alayna Martin dished out 33 assists while senior Ashley Edelen tallied a team-best 24 digs.
Illinois State pulled away late to take the first set, 25-18. The Redbirds hit .433 for the set, compared to just .079 for the Salukis. After Southern cut Illinois State's lead to three, 19-16 on a kill by Hannah Becker, the Redbirds won six of the last eight points to claim the set.Â
The Salukis rebounded with a strong second set. With the score tied 20-20, Estrada took over to tie the match, 1-1. With the Redbirds leading 24-22, a sideout kill by Estrada gave SIU life. She then combined with Brown to block a slide attempt by Jaelyn Keene, who finished with a game-high 30 kills. Estrada followed with back-to-back kills to emphatically tie the set score, 1-1.
"She's been battling a lot of physical stuff with her shoulder and that kinda thing, but she really dug deep and was definitely a leader for our team tonight," Thompson said on Estrada's performance.
Southern Illinois outlasted the Redbirds to win the third set and establish a 2-1 match lead. The Salukis led by as many as five in the frame, but the Redbirds battled all the way back to tie the score at 22-22. Two kills by Estrada, sandwiched between an ace by Edelen, gave Southern a 25-22 set three win.
Down to their final chance, the Redbirds overwhelmed the Salukis in the fourth, as they raced out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back. Illinois State won the set, 25-11, behind an outstanding .522 hitting percentage.Â
In the final set, the Redbirds got out to a 9-3 lead before the Salukis battled back to within one on four occasions. However, Illinois State sided out with Southern knocking at the door to win the match, 3-2.Â
The Salukis return to action tomorrow, Oct. 21 to host the Bradley Braves. First serve inside Davies Gym is set for 7 p.m.
