CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to Bradley, 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-9) Saturday evening inside Davies Gym.
The Salukis (4-17, 3-7 MVC) dropped the opening set, 25-19, but rebounded with a 25-19 set two win. The Braves took set three, 25-17, before Southern forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory in set four. Bradley opened set four on a 9-2 run and hung on to take the set and the match.
With the win, the Braves snap a 32-match road losing streak in conference play and an eight-match losing streak to the Salukis. It was Bradley's first win over SIU since Nov. 26, 2013.
"I thought Bradley played really well," first-year head coach Kari Thompson said. "They played with a lot of fight, a lot of heart and a lot of passion. You could tell they were fighting for their life and they played great."
Andrea Estrada tallied 12 kills and tied her career-high with 22 digs. Abby Barrow recorded nine kills, against just two errors, for a .292 hitting percentage. She also chipped in 13 digs and tied her career-high with four aces. Alayna Martin dished out 27 assists and added 10 digs, while Ashley Edelen finished with 22 digs.
Bradley pulled away late to take the first set, 25-19. A kill by Hannah Becker cut SIU's deficit to one, 18-17, but the Braves won seven of the last nine points to seal the set one win.
The Salukis countered by hitting .290 in set two while holding the Braves to just a .071 hitting percentage. A double block by Nellie Fredriksson and Kolby Meeks broke a 9-9 tie and gave SIU a lead it never relinquished.
A 6-0 run by the Braves broke a 13-13 tie in set three and the Salukis could get no closer then five after that in a 25-17 loss.
The Salukis trailed by four, 12-8 early in the fourth frame. With Barrow serving, SIU ripped off six-straight points to build a 14-12 lead. Southern's lead grew to five, 21-16 on a kill by Alysa Sutton and the Salukis forced a fifth set with a 25-22 set four win.
In the final set, the Braves opened up a commanding 9-2 lead. SIU got to within five on two occasions, including on Barrow's ninth kill of that match that made it 14-9. But an error ended the threat and sent Bradley back to Peoria with a win.
The Salukis return to action on Friday, Oct. 27 at Indiana State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
