The Southern Illinois volleyball team travels to Indiana over the weekend to take on Indiana State and Evansville. The Salukis and the Sycamores tangle on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., and SIU faces the Purple Aces on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Southern's match against Indiana State will be streamed on The Valley on ESPN3.
Scouting the Sycamores
The Sycamores are 5-5 in MVC play after winning two of their last three conference matches, posting wins over Valpo and Loyola before falling to Evansville in five sets. The Sycamores took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set against the Purple Aces, but Evansville prevailed behind 16 kills from Rachel Tam. The Sycamores offense runs through Laura Gross, who's 11.18 attempts per set are the 42nd-most in the nation while Cassie Kawa is second to SIU's Kolby Meeks for top hitting percentage in the MVC.
All-time vs. Indiana State
The Salukis hold a commanding 51-18-1 all-time record over the Sycamores. Indiana State snapped SIU's five-match win streak with a 3-1 win on Sept. 30. The Salukis have won nine of their last 11 over the Sycamores, and five of their last six over the Trees at Indiana State. In all, SIU holds a 22-8 record at Indiana State.
Scouting the Purple Aces
Evansville has won three of their last four after opening Valley play with six-straight losses. The Purple Aces defeated Bradley and Loyola, both in five sets, before getting swept at Valpo. Evansville responded with a five set comeback win over Indiana State on Oct. 20. The Purple Aces lead the Valley In aces (115) and are second in aces per set (1.29/set), while Cassie Brooks ranks seventh in the league in total digs (381).
All-time vs. Evansville
The Salukis hold a 44-11 advantage in the all-time series vs. the Purple Aces and have won 11 in a row over Evansville, including a 3-2 comeback win over the Purple Aces on Sept. 29. Southern's last loss in the series came on Oct. 28, 2011, a straight-set loss at Evansville, and the Salukis are 22-8 all-time at Evansville.
Leads the Valley
Kolby Meeks leads the MVC with a .362 hitting percentage. She has hit over .500 in seven matches this season, and has hit over .300 in 11 of SIU's 21 matches this season.
Active Career Leaders
Andrea Estrada's 1,308 career kills are the seventh-most in program history, and the 29th-most amongst active DI student-athletes. Her 1,225 career digs, meanwhile, rank her fifth in school history and are the 64th most amongst active players. Abby Barrow needs 44 kills to become the 15th Saluki to reach 1,000 career kills and her 956 kills rank in the top-100 at No. 93.
Closing in on 1000
Abby Barrow, who put down nine kills against two errors in Saturday's match against Bradley, is closing in on 1,000 career kills. She is 19 kills shy of becoming the 15th Saluki, and ninth active player in the Missouri Valley Conference, with 1,000 career kills.
53rd Double-Double
Andrea Estrada's back-to-back double-doubles gives her 53 for her career, which is tied with Marlo Moreland for the fourth-most in program history.
Four Shy of 1,300
Andrea Estrada is four digs shy of 1,300 for her career. When she reaches the milestone, she will join Kristie Kemner (1999-2002) and Jennifer Berwanger (2006-10) as the only Salukis in program history with 1,300 career kills and 1,300 career digs.
700 Career Digs
Ashley Edelen recorded her 700th career dig against Bradley on Oct. 21 She now has more digs this season (357) then she had during her previous three seasons combined (352).
Pocket Aces
Ashley Edelen recorded a pair of aces against the Bradley Braves on Oct. 21, which tied her career-best. It marked the fourth time in the Louisville, Ky. native's career that she has tallied multiple aces in a match, and the second-straight time it has happened against Bradley. Edelen recorded two aces in SIU's 3-1 win over the Braves on Sept. 22.
Four of a Kind
Abby Barrow tied her career-best with four aces against Bradley on Oct. 21. It's the second time this season that Barrow has recorded four aces, as she did so in SIU's 3-2 win over SEMO on Sept. 12.
Estrada's big weekend
Andrea Estrada recorded back-to-back double-doubles against Illinois State (10/20) and Bradley (10/21), as she put down 20 kills and added 12 digs against the Braves before notching 12 kills and 22 digs versus the Redbirds. Her 20 kills against Bradley marked the sixth time in her career she has put down 20-plus kills, and her 22 digs vs. the Redbirds tied a career-best.
Block Party
The Salukis recorded 11 blocks vs. Bradley, with three Salukis recording at least four block assists a piece. It marked the seventh time this season and 76th time in the past six seasons that Southern has notched double-digit blocks in a match.
100 Career Kills
Maggie Nedoma put down her 100th career kill in the win over Valpo on Sept. 25. Nedoma has recorded 10-plus kills in eight matches this season.
350th Kill as a Saluki
Kolby Meeks recorded the 350th kill of her Saluki career against Bradley on Oct. 21, and now has 355 kills since arriving at SIU as a junior transfer from South Alabama. Including her two seasons with the Jaguars, Meeks has 475 total career kills.
Tough Sledding
The cumulative win/loss percentage of SIU's opponents this season currently sits at .556, which is the highest in the Valley.
Getting more involved
Hannah Becker continues to get more swings, as she set career-bests in kills (6) and attempts (20) vs. Illinois State on Oct. 20.
