Barrow became the 15th Saluki in program history with 1,000 career kills.
CARBONDALE, Ill. --Â Senior outside hitter Abby Barrow recorded her 1,000th career kill but the Southern Illinois volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 26-28, 22-25) to Loyola Monday night inside Davies Gym.
The Salukis dropped to 5-19 overall and 4-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Loyola Ramblers snapped a 16-match losing streak to improve to 2-22, and 1-11 in the Valley.
Nine attack errors by Loyola led to a lopsided, 25-11 set one win for Southern. Loyola settle down, as the Ramblers committed just 12 errors during the next three sets combined. On the other side of the net, Southern, which had just three attack errors in set one, combined for 18 during the next three frames.Â
Loyola's block proved to be the difference as both the Ramblers and the Salukis finished with 11 blocks on the night.
"I thought (Loyola) did a nice job blocking," first-year head coach Kari Thompson said. "Their block really dictated what we were able to do offensively."
Barrow finished with eight kills, 15 digs and three aces. Her 1,000th kill came in the third set on a pass from her senior teammate Andrea Estrada that got SIU to within four, 23-19.
"I didn't even realize I had gotten it," Barrow said of her 1,000th kill. "I knew I was five away coming in, but I didn't realize I was down to one at that point. I was excited but I was more concerned with what was going on in the game."
Barrow is the 15th Saluki to reach 1,000 career kills, and the first to do so since Estrada put down her 1,000th on Oct. 21, 2016. The Metamora, Ill. native is the ninth active player in the Missouri Valley Conference to reach 1,000 career kills.
Estrada recorded her 54th career double-double, as she led the Salukis with 11 kills and added 10 digs. She also tallied four assists, three aces and two block assists.Â
The Salukis are back in action on Nov. 4 at Missouri State. First serve in Springfield, Mo. is set for 7 p.m.
