Salukis hang tough in loss to first-place Lady Bears

The Southern Illinois volleyball team hung around with the first-place Missouri State Lady Bears, but late runs in all three sets by the Lady Bears proved to be the difference. Missouri State improved to 14-0 in Valley play with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) win at Hammons Student Center.
The Salukis (5-20, 4-10 MVC) were led offensively by Abby Barrow and Andrea Estrada. Barrow tallied season-best in both kills and hitting percentage, as she hit .364 with 16 kills and nine digs. It marked the 11th time this season that the Metamora, Ill. native has put down double-digit kills. Estrada recorded her 55th career double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs, which are the third-most double-doubles in school history.
Alayna Martin notched her eighth double-double of the season, as she dished out 19 assists and added a career-high 16 digs. Ashley Edelen added 14 digs and now has 756 for her career.
Set 1
Abby Barrow put down a Lady Bears over-pass and a Missouri State attack error followed to tie set one, 11-11. A double block by Estrada and Patience Brown marked the seventh, and final, tie of the first frame at 17-17. Missouri State responded with a 6-1 run that effectively put the set out of reach. Barrow finished with five kills in the frame, while Estrada added four.
Set 2
A back-and-forth set from the onset, set two featured 11 ties and four lead changes. The Lady Bears broke a 13-13 tie with back-to-back points to take a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Missouri State's lead grew to three, 19-16, on a net violation by Southern. The Salukis countered by scoring six of the next nine to tie the set, 22-22, but the Lady Bears rattled off three-straight points to take set two, 25-22.
Set 3
The Salukis led early in set three, as another kill by Barrow gave SIU a 10-8 advantage. A 6-1 run by the Lady Bears gave the home team a three-point cushion, 14-11, but SIU answered with a 5-1 to take its final lead of the set at 16-Missouri State used a 3-0 run to build a lead it never relinquished.Â

The Salukis host Drake University on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. before taking on the Northern Iowa Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. for senior day. SIU will honor its six seniors, Andrea Estrada, Abby Barrow, Ashley Edelen, Kolby Meeks, Nellie Fredriksson and Gabriella Shepherd.
