CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2017-18 season with an 84-72 win over the UT Martin Skyhawks Friday night inside SIU Arena.
UT Martin (0-1) cut SIU's lead to five at the end of the first quarter and got to within two at the half, but the Salukis outscored the Skyhawks 22-6 in the third quarter to build a double-digit lead it never relinquished.
Senior Kylie Giebelhausen had a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Freshman Makenzie Silvey added 15 points, nine of which came in the second half. Sophomore Nicole Martin scored 10 points and added eight rebounds, while Kristen Nelson tied or set career-bests in assists (8), steals (4), rebounds (3) and minutes played (26).
"I feel very fortunate for us to get this win because I know how good UT Martin is and how good they can be," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "They're an extremely well coached team. But our kids hit buckets when we needed to hit buckets, got stops when we needed to get stops and came out with the win."
The Salukis three newcomers all played significant roles in the victory. Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer both started the contest and played over 20 minutes a piece, while Rachel Pudlowski played 12 minutes off the bench. Brockmeyer just missed her first collegiate double-double, as she had nine points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals while Pudlowski chipped in five points and three boards.
"I was very impressed with our freshmen," Stein said. "I really thought there would be a lot more nerves. I was ready for 'if this kid gets a little rattled, then this kid will go in'. We had a game plan for if someone got off-kilter but it never came. They played like veterans today."
UT Martin's Kendall Spray had 17 points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting to keep the Skyhawks within striking distance. She was 5-of-7 from downtown during the first 20 minutes of play and gave UT Martin their first largest lead, 34-31, on her fifth three-ball of the opening half.
"We put Kylie Giebelhausen on Spray in the second half to give (Spray) someone a little longer to shoot over," Stein said.
Giebelhausen used her nearly six-inch height difference to shut down the returning All-OVC selection in the second half. Spray went 1-of-5 from the field in the second half to finish with 20 points.
The Salukis shot 52.7 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from three-point range and dished out 20 assists on 29 field goals. SIU's defense was stifling as well, as they recorded 14 steals- the most in a game during the Cindy Stein-era.
SIU is back in action on Monday, Nov. 13 at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Tip-off against the Blazers is set for 4:30 p.m.
