Abby Brockmeyer recorded her first collegiate double-double in the loss.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball dropped a 76-66 road decision to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers Monday night.
The Salukis trailed by just three at the half, but UAB took a double-digit lead in the third quarter by taking advantage of SIU turnovers and hot-shooting from three-point range. The Blazers (2-0) turned 19 SIU turnovers into 17 points and made their first five three-pointers of the third quarter to build a double-digit lead they never relinquished.
"We didn't take care of the ball like we should have," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I didn't feel like we had so much pressure that we should have turned it over that many times. (UAB) scoring 17 points off of our turnovers and the second chance points absolutely killed us."
SIU was led in scoring by Nicole Martin, who finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal. It was not only one point shy of her career-best, but it was the eighth time in her career that she has reached double-digits. Martin was joined in double figures by Abby Brockmeyer and Makenzie Silvey.
Brockmeyer recorded her first collegiate double-double, as she poured in 17 points and added 10 rebounds. The Raymond, Ill. native also tallied two assists and three blocks in 31 minutes.
"I thought Abby played outstanding," Stein said. "She just battled. It was very physical underneath and I thought she did a fantastic job with that."
Silvey, meanwhile, finished with 10 points and four assists while Ashley Hummel chipped in nine points off the bench.
The Salukis trailed by five at the end of one, and got to within one on a layup by Brockmeyer with :03 to play in the first half. A late foul call gave the Blazers two free throws, and they capitalized to push their advantage to three at the break.
UAB's Rachel Childress scored 12 of her game-high 29 points in the third quarter on 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. She finished 7-of-9 from three-point range. Her fourth triple of the frame staked the Blazers to a 53-44 advantage with 6:15 remaining in the third. UAB closed on a 10-4 run to build a 15-point advantage at the end of three. The Salukis cut their deficit down to eight with just over three minutes to play, but it was too little, too late.
The Salukis are back on the road on Sunday, Nov. 19 at Memphis. Tipoff against the Tigers is set for 2 p.m.
