The Southern Illinois women's basketball team plays the second game of a three-game road swing Sunday at Memphis. The Salukis erupted for an 18-0 run in the third quarter of last season's 69-61 win over the Tigers.
Series History
Memphis leads the all-time series, 12-6 in a matchup that dates back to 1974. SIU has won three of the last three meetings between the two sides. Memphis won on a buzzer-beater at home in 2015. The series stretches back to the days when Memphis was known as Memphis State and has several interesting matchups, including one in the Women's NIT in 1983 (L, 77-69) and in Seattle for the Husky Classic in 1988 (W, 62-48).
Last Meeting
SIU 69, Memphis 61
An 18-0 third quarter run by the Salukis propelled SIU to a 69-61 win over Memphis inside SIU Arena on Dec. 11, 2016. SIU outscored Memphis, 24-to-9 in the third quarter, as the Salukis almost doubled their point total in the quarter. Rishonda Napier led the way for the Salukis, as she notched the first points-assists double-double by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin did it against Chicago State on Dec. 21, 2012. It also marked the first time a Saluki has dished out double-digit assists since Macklin did so in 2013.
SIU versus the AAC
The Salukis improved to 47-47 all-time against American Athletic Conference schools with last season's win over the Memphis Tigers. SIU also boasts wins over UCF, Cincinnati and Tulsa but a bulk of its record against AAC schools comes from longtime Valley foe and current AAC member, Wichita State. The Salukis were 38-34 all-time against the Shockers.
Current Salukis vs. the Tigers
Kylie Giebelhausen is averaging 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 blocks in three previous meetings with the Tigers, including five blocks against Memphis as a freshman.
Freshmen with 10-plus points
Mackenzie Silvey is just the 12th Saluki since 1983 to score 10-plus points in her first collegiate game. She's the first to do so since Ariel Haynes dropped in 10 points at Austin Peay on Nov. 11, 2011. Of the 12 Saluki freshmen to score 10-plus points in a season opener, Silvey's 15 points vs. UT Martin were the second-most. Tanaeya Worden scored 17 points vs. DePaul to open the 2007-08 season.
Other Saluki freshmen to score 10-plus in a season opener
Tanaeya Worden 17 vs. DePaul 2007-08
Olivia Lett 14 vs. SLU 2008-09
Mary Berghuis 12 vs. Tennessee 1984-85
Cari Hassell 12 at Vanderbilt 1994-95
Molly McDowell 12 vs. Wisconsin 1999-00
Meredith Jackson 11 vs. Murray St. 1996-97
Dana Olsen 11 vs. Missouri 2006-07
Racquel Ransom 10 vs. Illinois 1991-92
Maria Neibrugge 10 at Northwestern 1997-98
Teri Oliver 10 vs. SLU 2009-10
Ariel Haynes 10 at Austin Peay 2011-12
Silvey poured in 10 points at UAB to open her career with back-to-back 10-plus point outputs. She's just the ninth Saluki to post back-to-back double-digit scoring outputs to open her freshmen year.
More Freshmen Scoring
Silvey is just 46th Saluki freshmen to record double figure scoring outputs in at least two games during their freshman season. The school record, dating back to 1983, was set by all-time scoring leader Cartaesha Macklin. Macklin reached double figures in 26 of SIU's 30 games during her first season as a Saluki, including a school-record streak of 15-straight games. She also scored 20-plus points in 10 games - another Saluki freshman record.
Brockmeyer's double-double
Abby Brockmeyer recorded her first collegiate double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds at UAB. She's just the 13th Saluki freshman since 1983 to notch a double-double. Brockmeyer is the first since Nicole Martin, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds in SIU's win over Brescia a year ago. Only seven Saluki freshmen have ever recorded two or more double-doubles in their first season, with Dyana Pierre's nine double-doubles during her freshmen campaign the most by a Saluki first-year.
Freshman Record for Points in a game
Silvey's 15 points in her Saluki debut were tied for the 32nd-most by a first-year in school history. Cartaesha Macklin holds that record as well, as she poured in 27 points vs. IUPUI on Dec. 8, 2011.
Remember the name
Ashley Hummel made her presence felt in limited minutes at UAB. Hummel poured in nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in just five minutes against the Blazers. It was the most that the junior captain has scored against a DI opponent in her career while her four field goals tied a career-best.
Running the floor
Nicole Martin led the Salukis in scoring at UAB, as she finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal. It was not only one point shy of her career-best, but it was the second time this season, and eighth time in her career, that she has reached double-digits. Her 33 minutes played, meanwhile, was a career-best.
31 shy of 1000
Kylie Giebelhausen is 31 points shy of becoming the 25th Saluki to score 1,000 career points.
Doesn't happen often
Giebelhausen was 0-for-4 from behind the arc against UAB. It marked just the 20th time in her 96 career games that the East Peoria, Ill. native has been held without a three-pointer.
Nelson on the boards
Kristen Nelson grabbed a career-high six rebounds at UAB. Her five defensive rebounds were also a new career-best.
Eight Shy of 200
Kylie Giebelhausen is eight three-pointers shy of 200 for her career after she made three in SIU's season opening win over UT Martin. She would join Rishonda Napier and Teri Oliver as the only Salukis to make 200-plus in a career.
SIU in Home Openers
Southern has now won four-straight home openers under head coach Cindy Stein after the season opening win over UT Martin and are 21-22 in home openers dating back to the 1975-76 season.
Staying on the court
Staying with Giebelhausen, she became just the 11th Saluki in recorded history to play 3,000-plus minutes, and needs to play 251 minutes this season to pass Petra Jackson for fifth on SIU's all-time minutes played list. Last season, Rishonda Napier passed Cartaesha Macklin for the most minutes played in school history, and she finished her career with 4,138 minutes played.
Slight of Hand
SIU's 14 steals in the win over UT Martin on Nov. 10 were the most steals in a game during the Cindy Stein era and the most in a game by the Salukis since SIU swiped 17 against the Evansville Purple Aces on Jan. 2, 2010.
20+ assists in season opener
SIU dished out 20 assists in the season opening win, which marked the first time since the 1996-97 season that Southern has opened a season with that many assists. The Salukis notched 29 assists in a 95-63 win over Murray State on Nov. 23, 1996.
Win No. 700
The win over UT Martin marked the 700th win in SIU's recorded history.
Captains
Kylie Giebelhausen and Ashley Hummel will serve as captains for the 2017-18 Salukis.
