The Southern Illinois women's basketball team opens a three-game road swing at the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Monday, Nov. 13. Tipoff against the Blazers (1-0) is set for 4:30 p.m.
Series History
This marks just the third time that the Salukis and the Blazers have met on the hardwood, with the last meeting coming last season. UAB won that matchup at SIU Arena, 64-49. The last meeting prior to that came at the Long Island Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y. during the 2003-04 season. The Blazers hold a 2-0 all-time record in the series.
SIU versus Conference USA
SIU plays its first Conference USA opponent of the season in UAB. The Salukis are 8-20 all-time against Conference USA foes, including a 66-53 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Sweet 16 of the 1987 NCAA Tournament. Southern holds a 5-15 record on the road against current C-USA members. The Salukis last win over a Conference USA member came at the SIU Arena on Dec. 15, 1996, a 91-72 win over Middle Tennessee State.
Scouting the Blazers
The Blazers won their home opener, 87-72 over Mississippi Valley State.UAB led by just one, 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, but opened up a 13-point lead during the second quarter. Katelynn Thomas was 11-for-13 with 22 points, while Rachael Childress finished 7-for-12, including 6-of-11 from three-point range for 21 points in the win.
Slight of Hand
SIU's 14 steals in the win over UT Martin on Nov. 10 were the most steals in a game during the Cindy Stein era and the most in a game by the Salukis since SIU swiped 17 against the Evansville Purple Aces on Jan. 2, 2010.
20+ assists in season opener
SIU dished out 20 assists in the season opening win, which marked the first time since the 1996-97 season that Southern has opened a season with that many assists. The Salukis notched 29 assists in a 95-63 win over Murray State on Nov. 23, 1996.
SIU in Home Openers
Southern has now won four-straight home openers under head coach Cindy Stein after the season opening win over UT Martin and are 21-22 in home openers dating back to the 1975-76 season.
Handling the Point
Both Kristen Nelson and Brittney Patrick set career-bests for assists in their first game running the point for the Salukis. Kristen Nelson finished with eight assists, which were the most by a Saluki since Rishonda Napier dished out eight against Wichita State on March 10, 2017. Brittney Patrick tallied a career-best five assists in 22 minutes off the bench, and it was the first time since last season at Bradley (1/27/17) that the Salukis had two players with at least five assists.
Road Warrior
Kylie Giebelhausen led the Salukis in scoring on the road a year ago, as she averaged a team-best 14.5 points per game in SIU's 15 away games. For her career, the Preseason All-MVC selection averages 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game in road contests.
Eight Shy of 200
Kylie Giebelhausen is eight three-pointers shy of 200 for her career after she made three in SIU's season opening win over UT Martin. She would join Rishonda Napier and Teri Oliver as the only Salukis to make 200-plus in a career.
37 points shy of 1000
Giebelhausen had 25 points in the win over the Skyhawks, her third-highest scoring output of her career. The East Peoria, Ill. native now needs 37 more points to become the 25th Saluki to reach 1,000 points for her career.
Staying on the court
Staying with Giebelhausen, she became just the 11th Saluki in recorded history to play 3,000-plus minutes, and needs to play 251 minutes this season to pass Petra Jackson for fifth on SIU's all-time minutes played list. Last season, Rishonda Napier passed Cartaesha Macklin for the most minutes played in school history, and she finished her career with 4,138 minutes played.
Win No. 700
The win over UT Martin marked the 700th win in SIU's recorded history.
Captains
Kylie Giebelhausen and Ashley Hummel will serve as captains for the 2017-18 Salukis.Â
Non-Conference Slate
The 2017-18 Southern Illinois women's basketball team will play an 11-game non-conference schedule that features four teams that made the postseason a year ago. SIU plays four home non-conference games this season, beginning on Nov. 10 when it hosts UT Martin for the season opener. The Salukis will conclude their non-conference schedule at the San Juan tournament, which will mark the program's fourth international trip and first since 2008.
