The Salukis and the Cougars will meet for the sixth time on the hardwood.
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team will look for its third-straight win Monday when it hosts sister school SIU-Edwardsville. The non-conference slate begins at 6 p.m. and can be streamed using the WatchESPN app and fans can listen to the game here.
Series History
SIU leads the all-time series, 3-2 dating back to the 1975 season. The Salukis hadn't played the Cougars since 1975, before renewing the rivalry on Dec. 3, 2011. SIUE won the last meeting between the two schools, a 60-59 victory a year ago in Edwardsville.
Scouting the Cougars
The Cougars come into Monday's contest having won two-straight and sporting a 2-1 record, with their lone loss coming to Nebraska. SIUE trailed Nebraska by just two at the half and only five at the end of three, but the Huskers held on for a 62-53 win. Preseason All-OVC selection Donshel Beck, who recently became a member of the 1,000 point club, leads the Cougars with a 16.7 points per game average and also averages 7.0 rebounds per contest. Sydney Bauman is averaging 6.0 points and 12.0 rebounds a game as well. SIUE was picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll.
From the same neck of the woods
Paula Buscher and Cindy Stein are both Peoria, Ill. natives who went to Peoria Richwoods High School and both played for Hall of Fame coach Lorene Ramsey at Illinois Community College, though they were not in the same class in school. Stein holds a 5-1 all-time record against Buscher's teams dating back to Stein's days at Missouri and Buscher's days at Bradley. SIUE's 60-59 win over SIU last season was Buscher's first victory in the series.
SIU vs. the OVC
The Salukis are 2-0 this season against Ohio Valley Conference opponents, and in 179 lifetime meetings against OVC schools sport a .726 winning percentage (130-49).
First OT Win since:
SIU's overtime win over SEMO was it's first overtime game since the first round of the 2016 Women's Basketball Invitational against Western Illinois on March 17, 2016 and Southern's first overtime win since defeating Tennessee State in the consolation bracket of the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 21, 2015.
Freshmen in double figures
Abby Brockmeyer scored a team-high 15 points in a career-high 39 minutes in the win over Southeast Missouri on Nov. 22, which marked the third-straight contest in which the Raymond, Ill. native has reached double figures. Makenzie Silvey, meanwhile, had 12 points in the win over the Redhawks, which marked the third time in four tries that she has reached double digits in points this season.
Hitting Double Figures
Nicole Martin has reached double figures in scoring in all four of SIU's games this season, and five-straight dating back to last season. The Jefferson City, Mo. product did her damage at the charity stripe in Southern's win over SEMO on Nov. 22, as she scored 14 points and set career-bests in both free throws made (8) and free throws attempted (13) in the victory. It marks the 10th time in 35 career games that Martin has finished with 10-plus points.
Nine shy of 1000
Kylie Giebelhausen is nine points shy of becoming the 25th Saluki to score 1,000 career points. In doing so, Giebelhausen has a chance to join Valparaiso's Dani Franklin (1,294 points) and Missouri State's Liza Fruendt (1,234 points) as the only active players in the Valley in the 1,000-point club. When she does join the 1,000 point club she will be the first Saluki to do so since Rishonda Napier netted her 1,000 career point against UAB on Dec. 3, 2016.
4 from 200
Giebelhausen needs four three-pointers to reach 200 for her career. She will be just the third Saluki to make 200-plus three-pointers, joining Teri Oliver (2009-12; 235) and Rishonda Napier (2012-17; 277) as the only in program history to have accomplished the feat. Giebelhausen's 196 career three-pointers are the most of any player in the Missouri Valley Conference and are tied for the 25th-most among active DI players.
Career-high in minutes
Sticking with Kylie Giebelhausen, she played all but one minute in SIU's overtime win at SEMO. The senior co-captain played 44 of 45 minutes and scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists to help Southern improve to 3-1 this season. Giebelhausen is one of 11 in school history to have played 3,000-plus minutes and will eclipse 3,150 career minutes in the opening minute against SIUE.
Success against Memphis
The Salukis improved to 2-1 with a 68-56 win over the Memphis Tigers on Monday. It marked SIU's second-straight win over Memphis, and its third win in its last four tries over the Tigers. It was also Southern's first victory at Memphis since Nov. 26, 1985.
Disrupting passing lanes
SIU recorded 10 steals in its win over Memphis on Nov. 19. It marked the second time already this season that Southern has finished with 10-plus steals and is the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Salukis have twice nabbed 10-plus steals in their first three games. SIU's 14 steals in the win over UT Martin on Nov. 10 were the most steals in a game during the Cindy Stein era and the most in a game by the Salukis since SIU swiped 17 against the Evansville Purple Aces on Jan. 2, 2010.
First Career Three-Pointer
Ashley Hummel made her first career three-pointer in the win over SEMO on Nov. 22, and finished 3-for-3 from the floor in the victory. She has appeared in all four games this season and is shooting 76.9% from the field (10-of-13) with 22 points in 25 minutes off the bench.
