The Southern Illinois men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Friday, hosted by Iowa State.Â
A total of 37 schools from 13 conferences and nine states will travel to Ames, Iowa on Friday for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Sat., Nov. 18. The top-two teams in each race will qualify for the national meet, as will the top-four individuals not attached to a team already qualified. An additional 13 teams and a variable number of individuals are chosen at-large in the days leading up to the national meet.
On the men's side, All-MVC honoree Josh Maier will look to earn All-Region with a top-25 finish at the regional event. Maier finished fourth at the MVC Championships and will attempt to become the first Saluki to earn All-Region honors since Brian Dixon did so in 2012.
Maier and the SIU men's team will have to navigate a field that includes a pair of nationally ranked teams in No. 13 Minnesota and No. 20 Iowa State, as well conference champs from the Big 12 (Iowa State), American Conference (Tulsa), Summit League (South Dakota State) and the MVC (Bradley).
The Saluki women will lean on senior Claire Darnell and redshirt sophomore Megan Krolak. Darnell earned a spot on the 2017 MVC Scholar-Athlete team with her top-20 finish at the MVC Championships, while Krolak is coming off a 24th place finish at the conference meet.
The women's race features three nationally ranked programs in No. 14 Iowa State, No. 19 Oklahoma State and No. 30 Illinois as well as conference champions from the Big 12 (Iowa State), MVC (Bradley) and Summit League (South Dakota).
The women's 6K gets underway at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men's 10K at 11:45 a.m.
