Saluki Women's Basketball hosts UT Martin for season opener

The Salukis will try for their fourth-straight home opening win under head coach Cindy Stein.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team hosts the UT Martin Skyhawks for its season opener Friday, Nov. 10. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and can be heard on WHET 99.7 FM.
It will mark the 19th time the two schools have met,with UT Martin holding a narrow 10-8 advantage in the all-time series. Nine of SIU's 10 returnees have played against the Skyhawks before, led by Preseason All-MVC selection Kylie Giebelhausen, who finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists at UT Martin a year ago.
The Skyhawks return three All-OVC Second Team selections in Ashton Feldhaus (F/6-2/Sr.), Kendall Spray (G/5-7/So.) and Myah Taylor (G/5-10/Jr.). Feidhaus, a transfer from Butler, averaged 11.4 points per contest and Spray took home the OVC Freshman of the Year award as she scored 12.5 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the floor, including 38.4% from three-point range. Taylor was second on the team in points per game (12.1) and shot 43% from the floor.
The Salukis are next in action on Monday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. CST.

UT Martin (formerly Tennessee Martin) leads the all-time series, 10-8 in a matchup that dates back to 1973. The Salukis last defeated the Skyhawks in 2014, handing UT Martin one of their 11 losses that season with an 87-78 win at Martin, Tenn. The Skyhawks have won two in a row, and five of the last six meetings between the two programs, with Southern's last win over the Skyhawks on its home court coming on Dec. 19, 2000 with a 74-67 victory.

Four Salukis scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as UT Martin used an 8-0 fourth quarter run to sink the Southern Illinois women's basketball team, 76-68, on Nov. 29, 2016 at the Elam Center. The Salukis led at the half, 38-35 but the Skyhawks shot 65% from the field in the second half to seal the comeback win on their home court. Kylie Giebelhausen was the only returner to reach double figures in that contest, as she finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. In three career meetings against UT Martin, Giebelhausen averages 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

MVC Preseason Poll
The Salukis were picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll. Defending MVC champion Drake was projected to finish first, followed by Missouri State. Northern Iowa, SIU and Indiana State rounded out the top-five. It marks the third-straight season that SIU has been picked fourth in the annual poll, and the first time since the 1995-98 seasons that Southern has been picked in the top-four in three-consecutive seasons.
Exhibition Results
• In SIU's exhibition opening win over Kentucky Wesleyan (89-41) on Oct. 28, 9 of 10 Salukis scored at least two points in the win, with all three freshmen playing at least 15 minutes. Kylie Giebelhausen finished with a game-high 22 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the floor in the second half.
• The Salukis blew past Lindenwood-Belleville (90-68) on Nov. 3, as freshman Abby Brockmeyer led the way with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting and added 10 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass. Redshirt junior Celina VanHyfte tallied 15 points and six boards, while sophomore Kristen Nelson and freshman Makenzie Silvey each chipped in 10 points.

The 2017-18 Southern Illinois women's basketball team will play an 11-game non-conference schedule that features four teams that made the postseason a year ago. SIU plays four home non-conference games this season, beginning on Nov. 10 when it hosts UT Martin for the season opener. The Salukis will conclude their non-conference schedule at the San Juan tournament, which will mark the program's fourth international trip and first since 2008.

- The Salukis next regular season win will be the 700th in the program's recorded history.
- Giebelhausen is 11 three-pointers shy of becoming the third Saluki to make 200-plus in a career. She needs 89 to break Rishonda Napier's school record of 277. Giebelhausen's 82 treys a year ago were the 22nd-most in a single season in MVC history.
- Giebelhausen is 45 blocks shy of passing CiCi Shannon for second and 58 from breaking Dyana Pierre's school record of 162.
- Giebelhausen has started in 92 straight games entering her senior season. She has started every game since the third game of her freshman season, SIU's 82-75 win over Memphis on Nov. 26, 2014.
- Staying with Giebelhausen, she begins her senior season five minutes shy of 3,000 for her career. The East Peoria, Ill. native will become just the 11th Saluki in recorded history to play 3,000-plus minutes, and needs to play 289 minutes this season to pass Petra Jackson for fifth on SIU's all-time minutes played list. Last season, Rishonda Napier passed Cartaesha Macklin for the most minutes played in school history, and she finished her career with 4,138 minutes played.
