12/30/2017 | 1:25:00 | Women's Basketball
Terre Haute, Ind. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team will conclude its conference opening road swing at Indiana State on New Year's Eve. The Salukis and the Sycamores tip-off at 2 p.m. (EST). Southern won its conference opener for the fifth-straight season Friday behind 27 points and 14 rebounds from Abby Brockmeyer.
All-Time vs. the Sycamores
The Salukis and the Sycamores meet for the 91st time in a series that dates back to the 1968-69 season. The all-time series is tied 45-45 after a split last season but SIU has won five of the last six against Indiana State. The Sycamores one the series opener a year ago with a 68-53 win at Carbondale on New Year's Day. The Salukis rebounded with a 70-66 win at Terre Haute on March 2 which saw SIU shoot an astounding 70.6% from behind the arc, as Southern connected on 12-of-17 attempts from downtown and limited the Sycamores to 17 first-half points, the fewest points allowed in a first half by the Salukis in the Cindy Stein era, and the fewest since SIU held the Sycamores to just 14 points at the SIU Arena on Jan. 29, 2011. The Salukis have won three-straight in the Hulman Center, including last season's 70-66 win. Prior to fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein's arrival in 2013, Southern hadn't won in Terre Haute since 1999.
Oh what a night
The last time the Salukis were in the Hulman Center they drained 12-of-17 from three-point range, the best three-point field percentage with 10-plus makes in school history. The 12 makes were tied for the fifth-most in program history and marked the fourth time SIU has made a dozen 3-balls in a single contest. Of the nine times that the Salukis have made 12-plus three-pointers in a game, the Sycamores are the only opponent to appear twice on the list. Southern drained 12 against the Trees in Carbondale on Jan. 3, 2008, and nine years later, sank 12 at the Hulman Center on March 2, 2017. Three Salukis made at least three from long distance, including Kylie Giebelhausen, who made 6-of-8 (75%) from three-point land and tied a career-best with 26 points in the win. Carlie Corrigan and Rishonda Napier each added three 3-pointers in the win.
Current Salukis vs. the Sycamores
Kylie Giebelhausen is a lifetime 45% shooter from the field in six career meetings against the Sycamores, including 44.4% (16-of-36) from behind the arc. The All-MVC First Team selection from a year ago is averaging 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1.6 assists and 1.5 blocks in six career games against Indiana State and has reached double figures in four of those six contests. Nicole Martin had eight points and seven rebounds on New Year's Day last season and averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 26 minutes in SIU's two games against the Sycamores last year.
Scouting the Sycamores
The Sycamores open conference play Sunday on a six-game losing streak. Indiana State currently has three scoring in double figures, with Wendi Bibbins and Ashli O'Neal tied for the team lead at 11.2 points per game. Bibbins is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.6 rebounds per game, which are the second-most in the conference. The Sycamores have struggled to find their shot in the early going of the season, as they currently rank ninth in the league in field goal percentage (36%) and last in free throw percentage (64%) but have been able to stay in games by shooting 32.4% from three-point range, the fifth-best average in the conference and a +1.42 turnover margin, which is the best in the MVC. The Trees average a conference-leading 9.8 steals per game.
Dishing out helpers
Kylie Giebelhausen tied a career-high with seven assists and Makenzie Silvey set a career-best with five helpers in SIU's win over Evansville. It marked the second time this season that two Salukis tallied 5-plus assists in the same contest, as Kristen Nelson (8) and Brittney Patrick (5) did so in Southern's season opening win over UT Martin on Nov. 10, 2017.
Assist-to-turnover ratio
The Salukis tallied a +8 assist-to-turnover ratio against the Purple Aces, which was their highest of the season. It's the highest ratio since Southern posted a ridiculous +14 (26 assists-to-12 turnovers) in a 71-46 win over Loyola on March 4, 2017.
Getting the green light
The Salukis attempted 28 three-pointers in the win over Evansville with six different Salukis knocking down a trey. It was the most three-pointers shot by the Salukis since they attempted 34 at Evansville on Jan. 22, 2017.
Cleaning the offensive glass
The Salukis tied a season-best with 17 offensive rebounds in the win over Evansville, with a pair of Salukis notching career-highs in the category. Abby Brockmeyer set a career-best with six offensive boards while Lauren Hartman snagged a career-high four offensive rebounds in just three minutes off the bench.
Tying a freshman record
Abby Brockmeyer's career-high 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting tied the program record for points by a freshmen in a single game. Brockmeyer tied Cartaesha Macklin's school record of 27 points, set during a 77-63 win over IUPUI on Dec. 8, 2011. It marks the most points by a Saluki freshman in a Missouri Valley Conference game, and the third time a Saluki freshman has scored 20-plus points in a Valley contest. It is the 14th time in program history that a freshmen has scored 20-plus points.
Brockmeyer's night continued
Abby Brockmeyer snagged a career-best 14 rebounds in the win over Evansville, including six offensive rebounds. Brockmeyer's 14 boards are the fifth-most by a freshmen in program history, and the most since Lauren Hartman grabbed 16 rebounds in SIU's win at Purdue a year ago. Dyana Pierre holds the freshmen record for rebounds in a game with 19 against IPFW on Nov. 29, 2012.
Double-doubles
Brockmeyer recorded her third career double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds in the win over the Purple Aces, which is tied for the fifth-most double-doubles by a freshman in program history. Brockmeyer is tied with Cartaesha Macklin, who recorded three during her freshman campaign during the 2011-12 season. Dyana Pierre holds the record for most double-doubles by a Saluki freshman with nine.
All told
Brockmeyer set or tied nine career-bests in the conference opening win over Evansville including: points (27), rebounds (14), offensive rebounds (6), defensive rebounds (8), steals (3), field goals made (11), field goals attempted (14), three-pointers made (1) and free throws made (4).
Season-low for turnovers
SIU turned the ball over a season-low nine times against the Purple Aces as Kristen Nelson and Brittney Patrick combined for just one turnover in 40 minutes. It is the fewest turnovers for the Salukis since they turned the ball over eight times at Milwaukee in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational on March 15, 2017. The Salukis improved to 7-3 under Coach Stein when recording less than 10 turnovers.
Back-to-back double-digit scoring outputs
Kristen Nelson scored 13 points in the win over Evansville, including eight points in the final 3:08 to help SIU seal the win. It marked the first time in the Farmington, Mich. native's career that she has reached double figures in back-to-back games, and the fourth time in her career that she has scored 10-plus points.
All-Time in Conference Openers
The Salukis are now 5-0 in conference openers under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein. SIU had lost three-straight conference openers prior to Stein's arrival in 2013. Overall the Salukis hold a .567% winning percentage (21-16) in conference openers since 1981-82. The Salukis last opened five-straight conference seasons with a win from 1982-87.
One Last Ride
Kylie Giebelhausen ranks fourth in the MVC, and 32nd nationally, in minutes played per game (36.91/game). Of the 31 women ahead of Giebelhausen on the national list 20 are seniors while all three of the players who rank higher in the Valley than the Preseason All-MVC selection play for Illinois State: Viria Livingston (37.82), Paige Saylor (37.36), and Katrina Beck (37.25).
