Salukis start 2-0 in Valley play for second time under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter of a 64-45 victory over Indiana State in Missouri Valley Conference play Sunday inside the Hulman Center.
With the Salukis clinging to a three-point lead, 40-37 at the end of the third quarter, the Salukis (7-6, 2-0 MVC) outscored the Sycamores, 24-8 over the final 10 minutes of play to seal their second-straight Valley win. The 2-0 start to conference play marks the second such start for the Salukis under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein, and the first since the 2015-16 season.
The Salukis played stifling defense to hold the Sycamores to just 4-of-17 (23.5%) shooting in the fourth, including 0-for-6 from three-point range. Southern, meanwhile, locked in offensively, as they converted on 78.6% (11-of-14) from the floor during the final 10 minutes of play.
Abby Brockmeyer led the Salukis with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and a career-best four blocks. Makenzie Silvey added 13 points, of which six came in the fourth quarter, while Kylie Giebelhausen chipped in 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
"These first two games we knew we needed to start off conference play strong and we did a good job today of being ready at the tip-off," said Silvey.
Silvey scored in double figures for the sixth time this season while Brockmeyer now has five 10-plus point games this season and Giebelhausen reached double figures for the 60th time in her career.
The Salukis opened the contest on a 19-3 run that spanned the first eight minutes of the contest, as Southern forced six Indiana State turnovers through the first six minutes of play. The Sycamores countered with a 14-0 spurt over the next nine minutes to get to within two, 19-17 with 6:51 to go in the second quarter.
Southern sputtered offensively in the second quarter, as Indiana State broke out the full-court press and forced the Salukis to turn the ball over 10 times in the second period. The Sycamores, on the other hand, did not turn the ball over once in the second and went in the locker room down by just two, 27-25 after trailing by 16 earlier in the first half.
The Salukis, who turned the ball over 16 times in the first half, tallied just four turnovers in the second half, which included just one in the third quarter.
"You have to give Indiana State credit," said fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein. "They scrapped and tried to cause a lot of ugly play and get us off-kilter and they did. They did a great job of making that happen. We had to regroup and come back together. We only had one turnover in the third quarter, which I think was a miracle. We had some great toughness plays."
The Sycamores took their first lead during a see-saw third quarter, as a three-point play by Indiana State's Wendi Bibbins made it 37-36 with 1:42 to go in the third. A layup by Ashley Hummel and a jumper by Kristen Nelson gave the Salukis a 40-37 lead after three quarters.
Southern opened the fourth quarter with Brittney Patrick and Hummel on the floor, and the reserves helped Southern build a nine-point lead after just three and a half minutes. Layups by both Patrick and Hummel highlighted a 10-0 run that staked the Salukis to a 46-37 lead with 7:34 remaining. From there, SIU kept it's foot on the pedal, as it outscored Indiana State, 18-8 during the final 7:34 to seal the win.
"We had some kids come off the bench and play tremendous for us. Brittney Patrick did a great job of coming in and calming us down and getting us in the right groove," said Stein. "Ashley Hummel as well, she was so solid today coming off the bench for us."
The Salukis are back in action on Friday, Jan. 5 when they host the Northern Iowa Panthers. Tip-off against the Panthers is set for 6 p.m.
