The Salukis and the Panthers are two of the four Valley teams to start 2-0 in conference play.
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team hosts the Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. inside SIU Arena. Free #GoSalukis rollabanas will be given away to the first 300 fans in attendance and all kids who participated in the 2017 SIU Women's Basketball Camps are invited to attend the game free of charge. Friday's matchup that pits two of the four Valley teams to start 2-0 in conference play will air on ESPN3 and can be heard on WVZA 105.1 FM.
Series History
The Salukis and the Panthers will meet for the 71st time on Friday, with UNI holding a 37-33 advantage in the all-time series. Southern snapped a three-game losing streak to UNI a year ago when it overcame a 15-point deficit to down the Panthers, 64-59, inside the SIU Arena. SIU holds an 18-15 record against the Panthers at home, having won two of the last three meetings on its home floor. Four Salukis scored in double figures in last year's win led by Kylie Giebelhausen's 17 points.
Scouting the Panthers
The Panthers come into Friday's showdown with a deceiving 6-7 overall record. UNI has won three-straight, beginning with a 72-71 win at Kansas State. The Panthers downed Loyola and Valpo to open Valley play, with UNI winning by an average of 25 points per game in its two MVC victories. Megan Maahs is nearly averaging a double-double for the Panthers at 10.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Kennedy Kirkpatrick leads UNI in scoring at 12.1 points per game while the Panthers have had six different players lead the team in scoring in 13 games this season.
Current Salukis vs. the Panthers
Kylie Giebelhausen will play her ninth career game against the Panthers, a team that she has struggled against during her stellar career. Giebelhausen comes into Friday's contest with a 29.8% (14-of-47) lifetime shooting percentage against UNI, and has connected on just 5-of-23 (21.7%) of her attempts from behind the arc. The East Peoria, Ill. native has only once reached double figures against the Panthers, when she poured in 17 points on 54.5% shooting to lead the Salukis to a 64-59 win at home a year ago. Her 4.8 points per game average against the Panthers is the lowest for her against any Valley school.
Former Assistant
UNI head coach Tanya Warren was an assistant on Cindy Stein's coaching staff at Missouri, where the two coached together from 2001-04. During that stretch, the Tigers made the postseason all three seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2003-04 season. Warren was 0-1 in her playing career against SIU while at Creighton, but has fared much better since taking the reigns at UNI. Warren, the longest tenured coach in the MVC, holds an .818% winning percentage (18-4) against the Salukis, with three of SIU's four wins against Warren's Panthers coming during Stein's tenure as head coach. Warren holds a 7-4 all-time edge against her former boss dating back to Stein's days at Missouri.
Brockmeyer named both MVC Player and Newcomer of the Week
Abby Brockmeyer became just the fifth player in conference history to earn both honors in the same week and the first to do so in program history. She averaged 21.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals to help guide the Salukis to a pair of MVC road victories. Her 43 combined points in SIU's two wins are the most of any Valley player through two conference games this season and are the most by a freshmen to start Valley play in program history.
Brockmeyer is the fifth player in MVC history, and the second this season, to earn both weekly honors in the same week. She is the first freshmen to earn both honors since Jan. 19, 2009, when Casey Garrison of Missouri State swept both awards. Brockmeyer joins Illinois State's Kristi Cirone (Dec. 19, 2005), Creighton's Kelsey Woodard (Feb. 4, 2008), Garrison (Jan. 19, 2009) and Evansville's Hannah Noe (Nov. 13, 2017) as the only players to earn both awards since the conference began giving out the Newcomer of the Week award prior to the 2003-04 season.
Newcomer of the Week Continued
Brockmeyer earned her third Newcomer of the Week honor of the season after she helped SIU to a 2-0 start in Valley play. It's the most Newcomer of the Week honors earned by a Saluki in a single season since the 2009-10 season, when Stephany Neptune was named Newcomer of the Week five times. Brockmeyer joins Neptune and Carlai Moore, who earned three Newcomer of the Week honors during the 2005-06 season, as the only Salukis to earn three or more in a single season in program history.
Tied a School Record
SIU recorded a season-high 11 blocks in the 64-45 win over Indiana State on Dec. 31, with six different Salukis tallying at least one block. Abby Brockmeyer led the way with a career-high four blocks, while Kristen Nelson and Kylie Giebelhausen each turned away two shots. SIU's 11 blocked shots tied the school record for most blocks in a game, set just over 18 years ago on Dec. 29, 1999 at Indiana State when Southern also recorded 11 blocks. It's the most blocked shots by a Valley team this season, and marks just the fourth time in program history that SIU has turned aside 10-plus shots, all of which have come during league play.

Assist-to-turnover ratio
The Salukis tallied a +8 assist-to-turnover ratio against the Purple Aces, which was their highest of the season. It's the highest ratio since Southern posted a ridiculous +14 (26 assists-to-12 turnovers) in a 71-46 win over Loyola on March 4, 2017.
Tying a freshman record
Abby Brockmeyer's career-high 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting tied the program record for points by a freshmen in a single game. Brockmeyer tied Cartaesha Macklin's school record of 27 points, set during a 77-63 win over IUPUI on Dec. 8, 2011. It is the 14th time in program history that a freshmen has scored 20-plus points.
Brockmeyer's night continued
Abby Brockmeyer snagged a career-best 14 rebounds in the win over Evansville, including six offensive rebounds. It's the best SIU has shot from the field since shooting 57.1% in 77-70 win over SEMO on Dec. 9, 2016. The Salukis have won seven-straight when shooting 50% or better from the floor, and are 2-0 this season when doing so. Southern is 10-3 in five seasons under head coach Cindy Stein when making at least half of its attempts from the field.
Approaching a milestone
Head coach Cindy Stein sits just three wins shy of 350 for her career. The win over Indiana State marked her 65th career win as Southern's head coach.
19 shy of 500
Kylie Giebelhausen is 19 rebounds shy of 500 for her career. If and when she does reach 500, she will become the 23rd Saluki to do so.
Two shy of 100
Ashley Hummel's next two points will give her 100 for her career.
4th Straight Start
Celina VanHyfte made her fourth-straight start, which doubles her career total. VanHyfte came into the season with four starts in 56 career games during her freshman and sophomore seasons. She has appeared in all 13 games this season with four starts and she played a season-high 23 minutes in SIU's win over Indiana State. The Annawan, Ill. native finished 4-of-5 from field for eight points and added four rebounds.
