SIU improves to 3-0 in Valley play with win over UNI
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team rallied from a five-point fourth quarter deficit with 3:33 to play to knock off Northern Iowa in overtime, 60-53, outscoring the visitors 11-4 in the extra period for the victory.
The Salukis improve to 3-0 in MVC play for the second time in three seasons and the third time since the Valley began play in 1992. It also marked Southern's second-straight home win over the Panthers (6-8, 2-1 MVC), which marks the first time since the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons that the Salukis have posted back-to-back home wins over UNI.
Freshman Makenzie Silvey posted a career-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. The Glen Carbon, Ill. product was particularly effective in the extra frame as she scored seven points on 3-for-3 shooting with no bigger shot then her 3-ball to break a 53-53 tie with 1:26 to go in overtime.
"My teammates did a good job of setting me up and getting me open and we did a good job of executing the play," Silvey said. "That was just an open shot and we were looking to take open shots and I was able to knock it down."
It marks the second-straight game, and the seventh time this season, that Silvey has scored in double figures.
"Makenzie is fearless," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "She has a savvy to her that she wants to win. She's gritty and there isn't a bigger competitor then Makenzie Silvey. What I love about her is she can miss 10 shots in-a-row but she will still believe she will make the next one. And she usually does."
The win was a team effort in every regard as the Salukis battled defensively to hold the Panthers to 32.7% (18-of-55) from the field, including just 5.3% (1-of-19) from behind the arc. Southern forced 17 turnovers and improved to 3-0 this season when tallying 10-plus steals.
"I think were starting to embrace defense," Stein said. "As we continue to have success with it we build upon it a little more. I think we have good depth to play the type of defenses we need to to be effective."
Freshman Abby Brockmeyer contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals while Kristen Nelson and Nicole Martin each chipped in eight points.
Southern won its third-straight MVC game on a night in which its leading scorer, Kylie Giebelhausen, was held without a field goal. Giebelhausen was 0-for-4 from the field but a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and was instrumental in the Salukis forcing the overtime period.
With SIU trailing 49-47 with 40 seconds to play, Giebelhausen was fouled on an inbounds play and went to the free throw line. The East Peoria, Ill. native calmly sank both freebies and on the ensuing Panthers' possession, picked off Mikaela Morgan's pass to keep the scored tied.
"Everyone thinks Kylie should be rattling off all these threes but Kylie does so many other things for us," said Stein. "She's communicating out there and she makes adjustments on the court and tells kids. Defensively she gets her hand on so many basketballs, her defensive presence is just as much of her game as her offense."
The Salukis led 13-12 after the first quarter and pushed their lead to two, 22-20, at the half. UNI cut its deficit down to one at the end of three, 37-36 and opened a five-point lead with 3:33 remaining in regulation. Brockmeyer went to work as she scored five-straight points to tie the contest, 47-47 with 1:05 to play. UNI's Morgan drained a jumper with 43 seconds to play to give the Panthers the upper hand, but a foul on Giebelhausen allowed the Salukis a clear chance to tie. Giebelhausen didn't disappoint, as she drained both in front of the home faithful to send the game to overtime.
Silvey got the scoring started in the overtime period with a layup off a dish from Nelson but the Panthers answered with a free throw and a layup to take a 52-51 lead with 3:15 to play. Southern again turned to Silvey, who drained a runner in the lane on a feed from Brittney Patrick to give the Salukis the lead once again. After the Panthers made one of two free throws to tie the contest, SIU closed the contest on a 7-0 run to seal the victory.
The Salukis are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 7 where they host the Drake Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
