CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team returns to the SIU Arena Thursday, Dec. 7 to host the Martin Methodist Redhawks. Tip-off for Field Trip Day is set for 12 p.m., with the game being streamed live on ESPN3 and can be heard on WVZA 105.1 FM.
Scouting the Martin Methodist Redhawks
Martin Methodist, a NAIA school that plays in the Southern States Conference, has won three-straight, and seven of its last eight games. The Redhawks went 21-10 a year ago and advanced to their third-straight NAIA National Tournament, where they fell to Lindsey Wilson. Martin Methodist most recently upset No. 11 Bethel, 43-42 on Dec. 2, 2017. Jemia Carpenter led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds. Martin Methodist currently ranks in the top-10 of NAIA Division I in total blocks (5th, 44), total steals (7th, 124), and three-point field goal defense (10th. 24.9%). The Redhawks have two players averaging over 10 points per contest, led by Carpenter. Carpenter is averaging 12.4 points per game, including a season-high 21 points at Pikeville.
SIU vs. NAIA
Prior to last season's win over Brescia in which Southern broke the program record for points in a game (104), SIU hadn't faced a current National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school in a regular season game since 1985. Southern holds a 6-1 record in regular season games against NAIA foes, with its lone loss coming against Grand View College in 1976.

Career Three-Pointers

Giebelhausen ranks 21st in the NCAA among active players for career three-pointers and is on the verge of cracking the top-25 in Missouri Valley Conference history. The East Peoria, Ill. native is four treys shy of passing Bradley's Katie Yohn (2009-13) for 25th.
20 points shy of 24th
Kylie Giebelhausen can pass Ann Kattreh (1983-87) for 24th on SIU's all-time scoring list with 20 points. Giebelhausen has scored 1,041 career points.
Win over a Conference USA opponent
The Salukis held on for a 64-59 win at Marshall on Dec. 2. It was the program's first win over the Thundering Herd since 1993 and it also marked Southern's first victory over a Conference USA opponent since 1996.
Slight of Hand
Kylie Giebelhausen recorded a career-high seven steals in the win over the Thundering Herd, the most steals in a game by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin also nabbed seven steals against Evansville on Feb. 9, 2013. In doing so, she eclipsed the century mark for career steals and became the first player in program history with 1,000 points, 100 blocks and 100 steals.
The Salukis set season-bests in three-point FG percentage and three-pointers made against Morehead State, as SIU made 52.2% (12-of-23) of its three-pointers. It's the second time this season that Southern has made at least half of its attempts and the best it has shot from downtown since making 70.6% (12-of-17) of its attempts at Indiana State on March 2, 2017. It's 12 three-pointers were also a season-high as six different Salukis made at least one three pointer.
Already there
Ashley Hummel has been a spark off the bench in the post for the Salukis, and has appeared in all seven of SIU's games this season. With her basket against Marshall, she has now scored more points (28) this season than in 22 appearances a year ago (25). Her 13 field goals this season are four shy of her career total heading into this season.
Second Career Double-Double
Nicole Martin scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in SIU's 64-59 win over Marshall, which was her first double-double of the season and the second of her career. It was the second-straight game in which she has snagged double-digit rebounds, and the fifth time in seven games this season that Martin has scored in double figures. The Jefferson City, Mo. native reached double figures in six games during her freshman campaign and only once corralled double-digit rebounds. The sophomore forward also scored her 300th career point in the win over Marshall.
Making the most of her opportunity
Rachel Pudlowski made her first career start at Marshall and made the most of her opportunity, as she set or tied her career-high in seven statistical categories including points (12), field goals made (5), three-pointers made (2) and minutes played (24).
Freshmen scoring in double figures
With Rachel Pudlowski's 12 points against Marshall, she became the third Saluki freshmen to score in double figures this season. It's the second-straight season in which the Salukis have had three different freshmen score in double figures, and the 10th season since 1983 that Southern has had at least three first-years score 10-plus points in a game in the same season. During the 2010-11 and the 1999-00 seasons the Salukis had five different freshmen score in double figures- which are tied for the most in a single season in program history.
