Southern overcomes an eight point fourth-quarter deficit to win at Koch Arena for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
WICHITA- Kan. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team erased an eight point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Wichita State Shockers, 61-58 Sunday afternoon.
It was a total team effort for the Salukis (12-12, 6-7 MVC), who got production from their entire lineup to complete their first season sweep of the Shockers since the 2007-08 season.
Southern, which led for just 3:34 of the contest, held a one-point lead at the half but didn't regain the lead until the fourth quarter with 2:34 to play.
"I thought we lost our poise early in the ball game," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "It was a matter of us just settling down. I felt like as the game went on we got better with it, especially in the fourth quarter."
After the Shockers took a 10-point lead, 50-40 with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter, Stein turned to her reserves for a spark. Caitlyn Claussen provided one, as she got a jumper to go that helped jumpstart the offense heading into the fourth.
Stein kept with her reserves in the fourth stanza, and Ashley Hummel and Claussen both played big roles to help turn the tide in Southern's favor.
"I thought (Claussen and Hummel) brought really good energy," Stein said. "Ashley did a tremendous job in her minutes and did exactly what we asked her to do."
Hummel finished with four points, two rebounds and a block in nine minutes off the bench, with both of her baskets coming as part of a 6-0 run that cut Wichita State's advantage down to two, 50-48, with 7:48 to play.
After the Shockers opened up a four-point lead on a Taquandra Mike layup, SIU again responded, as Kylie Giebelhausen drained an off-balanced three-pointer to cut WSU's lead down to one, 54-53. Wichita State countered with a pair of free throws to again push its advantage back to three.
The back and forth continued but it was the Salukis who got the last laugh. After Wichita State missed a pair of free throws with Southern ahead 59-58, Claussen got the ball on the wing, drove to the basket and laid it in to give SIU a three-point lead, 61-58 with 1:01 to go in regulation.
Wichita State was called for traveling on its next possession, but SIU was unable to put the score out of reach off the turnover. Wichita State had one final attempt, but Southern's defensive pressure forced a tough shot and SIU escaped with the road win.
For the third-straight game, Giebelhausen led the Salukis in scoring, as she poured in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. She also added six rebounds and three steals. Rishonda Napier finished with 10 points and seven assists, while Kim Nebo tallied 12 points and nine rebounds.
Napier sank a pair of three-pointers to give her 266 for her career, which moves her past Jenni Lingor (Missouri State, 2002-05) for fifth on the Missouri Valley Conference's all-time list. She also became the third Saluki to reach 400 career assists, joining D.D. Plab and Cartaesha Macklin as the only players in SIU history to have done so.
The Salukis return to the SIU Arena on Feb. 17 when they host the Evansville Purple Aces. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
