CARBONDALE, ILL. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program grabbed their first victory of 2017 late last night, a 5-2 win over Austin Peay State. The Salukis now move to 1-4 overall and 1-0 at home.
The match started off good for SIU, winning two of the three doubles matches, securing the doubles point. Victoria Beirao and Meaghan Monaghan were dominant at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-1. Polina Dozortseva and Tereza Klocova followed in their footsteps, also winning in dominant fashion, as they won 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
SIU had a 1-0 lead for the first time this season heading into singles play, and wasted no time picking up more points. The Salukis won three of the first four singles matches that finished, clinching their victory. Southern received wins from the No. 2, 3, 5, and 6 spots, two of which were in straight sets. Xiwei Cai grabbed a three set win at the No. 2 spot, moving her overall record to 4-1. Athena Chrysanthou and Polina Dozortseva both won extending their winning streaks to two in row.
"We were aggressive in double and returned better, so it was much easier to get the doubles point," head coach Audra Anderson said. "The girls are starting to find their games, but we need to do a little bit better job of staying in the present and not letting the past affect us. Overall a very good win."
The Salukis will be back in action this upcoming Friday to face off with regional rival, Southeast Missouri State.
