CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team extended their winning streak to two today against Southeast Missouri State. The Salukis beat the Redhawks, 6-1.
Southern started their day winning the doubles point. All three doubles pairs won their match, giving SIU an early 1-0 lead. Meaghan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao were the first to finish, winning in dominating fashion, 6-1. Right behind them were Polina Dozortseva and Caroline Taty, who won, 6-2. Ana Sofia Cordero and Xiwei Cai were the last pair to finish, winning 6-4 at the No. 1 slot.
"We played with a lot more confidence tonight," head coach Audra Anderson said. "Some of the matches were very authoritative, which makes us very happy. Are doubles were very aggressive and we really dictated the points early on."
SIU continued their hot streak in singles play, winning five of six singles matches. Cai and Klocova got the party started first for SIU, picking up straight set wins to extend Southern's lead over SEMO to three. With four matches still to finish, the Salukis only needed to win one of them to secure the victory. It took just two matches to get that win, as Monaghan picked up a straight set victory at the No. 4 spot. Beirao and Yana Golovkina went on to win the remaining two matches to bring the score to 6-1.
"It's a great start to our weekend," Anderson said. "We're going to try to extend that winning streak to three on Sunday."
The win moves SIU to 2-4 on the season and 2-0 at home. They will be back on the courts this Sunday to take on UT-Martin at 9:30 a.m.
