MADEIRA BEACH, FLA. – The Southern Illinois softball program wrapped up its weekend this morning with a 5-4 loss to Boston University. The Salukis finished the weekend with a tournament record of 3-2.
Nicole Doyle started for SIU and had a rocky first inning. The Terriers were able to get two runs off of two timely hits, to take an early 2-0 lead. SIU responded in its first plate appearance. The Dawgs got a triple from Merri Anne Patterson, which drove home Eyrika Brandenburg. Shaye Harre followed with a single that scored Patterson from third, tying the game at two.
After the first inning, it was a pitching dual for two innings. Doyle saw only three batters both innings and gave up one hit. SIU backed up Doyle with great defense, catching the Terriers between the bases to end BU's scoring threat in the third.
In the top of the fourth inning the Terriers struck again. With two outs in the inning, BU hit back-to-back doubles to take a one-run advantage. SIU, like the first inning, came back with runs of its own in the bottom half. Kyleigh Decker led off the inning with a single, followed by a well-positioned bunt from Savanna Fisher that put runners at first and second. After that, Susie Baranski bunted them both over, giving Southern two runners in scoring position with one out. The next batter was Brandenburg and she lined one up the middle for a two-RBI single, giving SIU its first lead of the game.
The top of the fifth inning was the longest half inning of the game. Boston was able to load the bases with only one out. The Terriers seized the moment, singling and drawing a hit-by-pitch to score two runs and regain the lead. SIU tried to bounce back in the remaining three innings with base runners, but none were able to score.
The loss to Boston moved SIU's overall record to 6-4. The Saluki travel to Starkville, Mississippi next weekend for a tournament hosted by Mississippi State.
