CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team dropped two matches this weekend. Saturday the team lost to Missouri Valley Conference opponent, Wichita State, 5-2 and then lost to the University of Illinois, 4-0, today.Â
Saturday's match was SIU's opening conference match this season. The team came out hot in doubles play, winning two of three matches. Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero won at the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-4, and Polina Dozortseva and Tereza Klocova grabbed a victory at the No. 3 doubles, 7-6(6).The two doubles wins secured the doubles point, giving SIU an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Transitioning to singles play, Southern struggled at nearly every position. Singles spots one through four and six all lost in straight sets, giving the Shockers five points. The lone singles win came from Athena Chrysanthou at the No. 5 spot, 7-5, 3-2.Â
"The team showed up with a brand new determined attitude," head coach Audra Anderson said. "They came out of the gates and earned that doubles point. In my ten years at SIU we have never won the doubles points against WSU. And that's the most points we've ever gotten off of a Wichita State team period. I'm very proud of these girls and they are ready to take on the conference."
The second match this weekend was today against the Fighting Illini. The Salukis lost, 4-0, in a quick match in Champaign. UI started the match with impressive wins in doubles play. The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches both ended 6-3 in favor of the blue and orange.Â
Going into singles play down 1-0, the Salukis dropped three quick matches at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots. In two of the three matches that didn't finish the team was down one set. Vitoria Beirao was the only Salukis to win the first set, but the match was called before they could finish.Â
"We fought on every court," Anderson said. "The girls are really stepping on the court and competing with the best of them. We are really starting to win the duece points, which we were lacking earlier in the season."Â
Southern is back in action this upcoming weekend against Evansville in Indiana for their second conference match this year.Â
