Women's tennis falls on the road

EVANSVILLE, IND. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team fell to the University of Evansville, 4-3, today. The loss moves SIU's overall record to 6-11, and 0-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Southern's second conference match of the season was a close one. Things started off with the Purple Aces winning the doubles point. UE won the No. 1 and No. 2 spots by more than four points in both matches. The third doubles match went unfinished, as Polina Dozortseva and Yana Golovkina were tied at 4-4 with the Purple Aces No. 3 team before the match was called.Â
Going into singles play down 1-0, SIU battled back. The Dawgs got wins from Athena Chrysanthou, Meagan Monaghan, and Polina Dozortseva. Chrysanthou won at the No. 3 singles spot in straight sets and so did Monaghan from the No. 5 slot. Dozortseva's match went to three sets, picking up wins in the first and third. The three wins got the score of the match to 3-3 before SIU lost the final singles match, clinching the victory for Evansville.
Chrysanthou's victory moved her to 2-0 in conference play, keeping her undefeated. Her two wins account for half of the Salukis conference singles wins this year.
The team will be back in action this coming weekend for two more conference matches on the road. SIU will take on Illinois State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then turn around on Sunday to play Bradley University at 10 a.m.
