CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team (8-11) played two Missouri Valley Conference matches over the weekend and won them both. The first match was on Saturday against Illinois State and the Salukis walked away with a 4-3 victory, and today the team faced Bradley University, also winning, 4-3.Â
In Saturday's match the team took on a short handed ISU squad. The match began with SIU winning the doubles point. Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero defeated the Redbirds No. 2 doubles team, 7-5, and that was all the team needed to secure the point. ISU was unable to field a third team, causing them to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match.Â
Going into singles, SIU only needed three singles wins to secure the victory. The team found success at the bottom of their lineup, getting wins at the No. 5 and 6 spots. Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beiroa both picked up wins, one in straight sets and one by forfeit, giving SIU three points total. Athena Chrysanthou picked up the final point for the maroon and white to seal the match at the No. 3 slot. Chrysanthou won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
"ISU is a team that fights at every position," head coach Audra Anderson said. "I'm disappointed that we didn't get three singles matches that were very close, but we did very well at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, owning those courts. Doubles was also a big point for us, something that was a goal going into the match."
In SIU's second match of the weekend they took on the Braves from BU. Like Saturday's match, things started off with the Salukis winning the doubles point. The duo of Cai and Cordero won at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, going undefeated on the weekend. Polina Dozortseva and Athena Chrysanthou won at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, to securing the point for SIU.
Southern went into singles play for the second day in a row with only needing to win three singles matches to  beat their conference foe. Monaghan yet again came through for SIU, this time from the No. 4 singles spot. The Saluki senior won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Fellow senior, Cordero, also won in straight sets from the No. 2 position, giving SIU their third point. The team eventually won the match, getting a win from Cai at the No. 1 slot. Cai won in straight sets.
"Today was all about winning ugly," Anderson said. "We were mentally tough and didn't get frustrated with the wind. A win is a win and we'll take it. We have to continute to keep working in practice on executing and staying tough, and getting better every day!"
The two wins move the Salukis' conference record to 2-2. Southern plays their final home match of the season this coming Saturday against Missouri State at 2 p.m.
