Salukis win six event titles, tally 18 top-three finishes at Joey Haines Invitational

The Southern Illinois track and field team won six event titles and tallied 18 top-three finishes at the Joey Haines Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Kyle Landon won both the long jump and the high jump for the second-straight meet, while Chad Weaver joined Landon on the top-spot of the podium with his win in the men's pole vault.

On the women's side, Savannah Long won for the second-straight meet in the 400-meter hurdles, while Kilee Hagerstrand and Alexis Roberson each won for the first time this outdoor season. Hagerstrand's win came in the javelin while Roberson's victory in the shot put was the first of her collegiate career.

Landon was Southern's lone double-winner, as he won the long jump with a lifetime-best of 24'-7.25" (7.50m) and added a win the high jump with a clearance of 7'-1.50" (2.17m). The Chester, Ill. native moves up to 13th in the NCAA west region with his long jump mark, and remains third in the NCAA in the high jump.

The Salukis swept the top-3 spots in the men's pole vault as Chad Weaver cleared a season-best 16'-6.75" (5.05m) to win for the second-straight meet Saturday. Nathan Schuck took second after he cleared 15'-7" (4.75m) on his first attempt, while Chase Black finished third with a clearance of 15'-1" (4.60m).

Long followed up her outdoor debut win with her second-straight victory in the 400-meter hurdles. The DeKalb, Ill. native shaved more than a second off of her previous personal-best with a winning time of 1:02.10.

Hagerstrand made it a clean sweep for the Saluki women hurdlers, as she claimed her first victory of the outdoor season in the 100-meter hurdles. She won with a personal-best time of 14.10. All told the seven-time NJCAA All-American competed in five events on Saturday, and in addition to her win in the 100m hurdles, added a third place finish in the javelin with a season-best toss of 125'-0" (38.09m).

Shafiqua Maloney ran the seventh-fastest 400m time in school history to take second to Middle Tennessee State's Abike Egbeniyi, who broke the meet record with a winning time of 53.66. Maloney's time of 54.37 was not only a personal-best, but it is the 14th-best in the NCAA west region.

The Saluki throwers accounted for five top-three finishes beginning with Isaac Ingram's third place finish in the hammer. He took third with a lifetime-best mark of 192'-7" (58.69m). It was nearly a 14-foot PR for the Harrisburg, Ill. native. Ingram wasn't the only thrower on the men's side to set a personal-best Saturday, as Ricky Hurley set outdoor personal-bests in all three throws.

Jared Kern made his outdoor debut, taking third in the shot put. The 2017 NCAA Indoor All-American threw 61'-4" (18.69m) on his first attempt, which is the sixth-best throw in school history and the ninth-best in the NCAA west region. Saluki volunteer assistant coach Josh Freeman won the event with a meet record toss of 65'-6.25" (19.97m), breaking a meet record that had stood since 1982.

Friday night's festivities were highlighted by the outdoor season debut of 2016 Olympian DeAnna Price, who won the hammer throw with a mark of 236'-7" (72.12m). It's the second-best mark in the United States so far this season, as she supplants fellow Saluki alumna Gwen Berry for second on the U.S. list. Berry threw 236'-0" (71.94m) at the Walker Invitational last weekend.
