Southern records four top-10 school marks on day two of the three-day event
The Southern Illinois track and field team turned in several noteworthy performances during day two of the 50th-running of the Tennessee Relays Friday, highlighted by a top-three NCAA mark in the shot put and two additional top-15 regional marks.
Â
Jared Kern notched the third-best throw in the NCAA, while Chad Weaver and Warren Hazel each posted wins and top-15 NCAA west region marks.
Â
Kern hurled the longest throw in the NCAA west region, and the third-best mark in the NCAA, to finish second in a fiercely contested shot put competition at Tennessee's Tom Black Track.
Â
The Machesney Park, Ill. native moves up to second on SIU's all-time outdoor shot put list with his toss of 64'-5.75" (19.65m). Kern is second to Josh Freeman, who bested Kern to win the shot Friday after he uncorked the fourth-longest throw in the United States, and the 17th-longest throw in the world at 67'-11.75" (20.72m).
Â
Over at the pole vault, Weaver won after he cleared a personal-best 17'-00.75" (5.20m) on his third attempt at the height. The Frankfort, Ill. native now has the 12th-best clearance in the NCAA west region, and moves up to sixth on SIU's all-time outdoor list. He is just the ninth Saluki to clear 17'-or higher outdoors.
Â
On the track, Warren Hazel won the 400-meter dash in his season debut in the event. The Old Roads, St. Kitts native's winning time of 46.83 is the 13th-best mark in the NCAA west region.  He later took fifth in the 200m, missing a personal-best by .01 seconds.
Â
The Salukis tallied their fourth top-10 school mark in the women's 200m, as Tyjuana Eason clocked a time of 24.15 to finish eighth. Eason, who broke the school indoor record in the 200m at the 2017 MVC Indoor Championships, now has the ninth-best outdoor 200m time in program history.
Â
The final day of the Tennessee Relays begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the women's discus. Relay events start on the track at 12 p.m. with the women's 4x200m relay.
