Maier, Krolak lead SIU at Commodore Classic

The Saluki cross country teams turned in another solid outing at their second meet of the season Saturday, Sept. 16. SIU's men took 12th in a 15-team field while Southern's women finished 12th out of 17 teams.
Josh Maier led the Saluki men with a 29th place finish in a field of 172 runners. The redshirt junior finished the 8K in 25:54. Cain Hassim finished 89th in 27:09, while his younger brother, Theo, wasn't far behind in 99th place with a time of 27:20.
Middle Tennessee State won the men's team title on the strength of three top-10 finishes. The Blue Raiders scored 64 points to edge out Butler (68) and Lipscomb (92). SIU (340 points) finished ahead of Austin Peay (341), Western Kentucky (362) and Kennesaw State (404).
On the women's side, Megan Krolak was Southern's top finisher. The redshirt sophomore from Peru, Ill. finished the 6K in 18:13 to place 31st in a crowded field of 192 runners. Junior Claire Darnell finished 78th in 19:01, while senior Kelly O'Shea placed 92nd.
Ohio State won the women's team title with 60 points. Missouri's Karissa Schweizer, the defending NCAA XC Champion, won the individual title with a time of 16:25. The Salukis (338 points)Â finished ahead of Tennessee Tech (378), Kennesaw State (411), Marshall (445), Austin Peay (452) and Western Kentucky (523).
The Salukis are back in action at the Joe Piane Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 22. The race is slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
