Saluki cross country heads east to run in the 62nd annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame, at Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., Friday afternoon.
The meet consists of three different races: blue, gold and open. The Salukis will run in the gold races, beginning with the women's 5,000-meter race at 4:15 p.m. CT, followed by the men's 5-mile race at 5 p.m.
The Saluki women are one of 27 teams entered in the gold race, and will be joined by likes of DePaul, Indiana State, Iowa, Northern Iowa, South Carolina, Valparaiso and Wichita State. SIU's men are one of 22 teams running in the gold race, with familiar foes Northern Iowa, Loyola, Saint Louis, and Valparaiso also set to compete.
The women's team is coming off a 12th-place finish at the Commodore Classic on Sept. 16. Megan Krolak was SIU's top finisher for the second-straight meet, as she finished the 6K in 18:13 to place 31st in a crowded field of 192 runners.
Krolak was followed by Claire Darnell (78th), Kelly O'Shea (92nd), Hillary Merrill (113th) and Sasha Lanning (131st).
The men's team also finished 12th at the Commodore Classic. Josh Maier was the first Saluki to cross the finish line, as he led with a 29th place finish in a field of 172 runners.
Cain Hassim (89th), Theo Hassim (99th), Jonathan Vara (107th) and Jacob DeWitt (114th) rounded out the top-five for SIU at the Commodore Classic.
