The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to Illinois State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday night at Redbird Arena.
Â
Kolby Meeks and Patience Brown each finished with six kills to lead the Salukis (2-11, 1-1 MVC). Andrea Estrada added five kills and four digs, while Abby Barrow tallied 12 digs to record double-digit digs for the second-straight match. Ashley Edelen totaled a team-best 16 digs, while Rachel Maguire dished out 10 assists.
The Salukis couldn't find an answer for Illinois State middle hitter Jaelyn Keene, who hit a game-high .385 and finished with 19 kills on 39 swings. She opened the match with seven kills in the first frame, and followed with six in both the second and third sets.
The Salukis rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the first stanza with Barrow at the service line, as the Metamora, Ill. product served four-straight points to give Southern a 12-10 lead. A kill by Patience Brown gave SIU its largest lead of the set at 18-14. The Redbirds chipped away, with three-straight points cutting Southern's lead down to one. A Meeks kill gave SIU a two-point cushion, 21-19, but back-to-back Redbird kills and a timely ace gave the home team a set one win.
The Redbirds (8-8, 1-1 MVC) got out to a 4-0 advantage in the second set, forcing SIU to play catch-up early. After a double was called against the Salukis to give Illinois State a 14-9 lead, Edelen served the Salukis back into the match with an ace that highlighted a 5-0 SIU run that tied the score, 14-14. That was as close as Southern could get though, as the Redbirds utilized a 4-0 spurt to get to set point and eventually close out the frame.
It was SIU who got out to the fast start in the third set, as Southern used three attack errors and an ace by Barrow to take a 4-0 advantage. The Redbirds answered with five-straight points of their own to claim a 6-5 lead. Illinois State continued to score in bunches during the frame, as it strung together three separate runs of four-straight points or more in the set to seal the win.
The Salukis will return home to Davies Gym on Monday, Sept. 25, when they host Valparaiso University for the first Missouri Valley Conference matchup between the two schools in any sport. First serve between the Crusaders and the Salukis is set for 7 p.m.
