CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team (11-8, 6-2) hosts second-place Missouri State (11-8, 7-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. in the annual Blackout Cancer game. Saluki Athletics partners with Southern Illinois Healthcare each year for games during Football, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball season, in which fans bid on the game-worn jerseys. The proceeds raised go to benefit the SIH Cancer Institute, which provides quality state-of-the-art care, close to home, for cancer patients, caregivers and their families.
All-Time vs. the Lady Bears
The Salukis and the Lady Bears meet for the 80th time in a series that dates back to the 1970-71 season. Southern trails the all-time series, 28-51. Two years ago, the Salukis snapped a nine game losing streak to the Lady Bears behind 23 points from Rishonda Napier. Missouri State responded by sweeping the season series a year ago. The Lady Bears have won 11 of the last 12 meetings, and 37 of the last 42 meetings dating back to the 1997-98 season. Four of SIU's five wins over Missouri State since '97-'98 have come on its home floor. The Salukis are 14-20 all-time on their home floor against the Lady Bears.
Current Salukis vs. the Lady Bears
Kylie Giebelhausen has scored in double figures in four of her six career meetings against Missouri State, including three-straight. She is averaging 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals in her career versus the Lady Bears with a personal-best 19 points at Missouri State on Feb. 10, 2017. Kristen Nelson averaged 7.5 points per game against Missouri State a year ago.
Scouting the Lady Bears
The Missouri State Lady Bears come into Friday's matchup having won five-straight, and seven of their last eight. The Lady Bears swept Valparaiso and Loyola at home behind Liza Fruendt, who averaged 31.0 points per game in MSU's two wins. Fruendt leads the league with a 16.7 points per game average and is second in three-pointers per game with 2.21. She averaged 23.0 points per game in MSU's sweep of SIU last season. The Lady Bears lead the Valley with the fewest turnovers (248) and average the fewest turnovers per game (13.1) of any MVC school.
Milestone win
Cindy Stein won the 350th game of her career with the win over Loyola on Jan. 19. Her 351 career wins are the most among active Missouri Valley Conference coaches.
Silvey named Newcomer of the Week
Makenzie Silvey was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after she averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of MVC wins over the weekend. It marks the fourth time this season that a Saluki has claimed Newcomer of the Week honors, as Abby Brockmeyer is a three-time recipient of the award. Silvey's win marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that SIU has had multiple players earn Newcomer of the Week recognition during the same season.
Charity Stripe
The Salukis shot 81.5 percent (22-of-27) from the free throw line in their win over Valparaiso, including 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Southern's 22 made free throws were its most since also making 22 in an 87-72 win over SEMO on Dec. 22, 2015.
Making her freebies
Nicole Martin finished with 18 points in the win over Valparaiso, which marked the 13th time in 19 games this season that she has reached double figures. 12 of her 18 points came at the charity stripe, as Martin knocked down 12-of-13 Sunday. Her 12 makes were a career-high and the most by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin made 12 freebies on her way to a career-high 34 points against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 24, 2012. Martin leads the Valley in free throws attempted (99) and is currently second in free throws made (70).
Lucky No. 13
Martin tied a career-high by getting to the free throw line 13 times in SIU's win over Valparaiso on Jan. 21. It marked the third time this season that the Jefferson City, Mo. native has shot 13 free throws in a single game. Martin is the first Saluki to get to the free throw line 10-plus times on three separate occasions since Mercedes Griffin did so during the 2013-14 season.
10-plus steals
The Salukis recorded 11 steals in wins over Loyola and Valparaiso last weekend, which marks the seventh time SIU has swiped 10-plus steals in a game this season. That's the most 10-plus steal games in a single season in the Cindy Stein era, and the most since the 2012-13 season when the Salukis posted eight games with 10-plus steals. The school record for most games with at least 10 steals is 20, set by the 1994-95 Salukis. Southern is 5-2 this season when snagging 10-plus steals and are 118-104 (.531) since 1988 when finishing with at least 10 steals.
RPI
The Missouri Valley Conference has three teams with top-175 RPIs, according to Warrennolan.com. Drake leads the way at 114 while Missouri State is second at 116 and SIU is third at 167. UNI (188) and Bradley (217) round out the top-five.
Rank in the top-3
The Salukis rank in the top-3 of the Missouri Valley Conference in both steals and blocked shots, as Southern is currently second in blocks and third in steals. SIU has never finished in the top-5 of both categories in the same season since the NCAA began recording steals and blocks during the 1987-88 season. The Salukis have only finished in the top-five of the conference in steals four times in the past 30 years, most recently when they finished third in 2007-08. Southern has finished in the top-five of the league in blocks in three of Coach Stein's four full seasons and 17 times in the past 30 years. The Salukis have twice (1988-89, 2011-2012) led the league in blocks and finished fourth in 2015-16.
Ranked Nationally Amongst Freshmen
Abby Brockmeyer is averaging 1.32 blocks per game, which is second to Kaylan Hoffman of Evansville for the most by a freshmen in the MVC. Not only does she rank second in the league amongst freshmen for blocked shots, but she ranks 20th nationally among freshmen in the category. She also ranks in the top-20 nationally amongst freshmen in rebounds per game, as her 7.2 rebounds per game are tied for the 14th-most by a freshmen nationally. Her 7.2 rebounds per game are the most for a Valley freshman.
Silvey in double figures
Makenzie Silvey scored in double figures for the 11th time in her young career in the win over Valparaiso. That is the eighth-most in a single-season by a freshman in program history.

Back-to-back games with single-digit turnovers
The Salukis recorded eight turnovers in the win over Bradley and tallied just nine turnovers against Illinois State on Sunday. In doing so, it marked the first time since the 1992-93 season that SIU has recorded less than 10 turnovers in back-to-back games. Southern last accomplished the feat against Bradley and Illinois State ironically, as SIU recorded just nine turnovers against Bradley on Jan. 14, 1993 and only nine turnovers two days later in a 73-64 win over Illinois State on Jan. 16, 1993.
Off to a fast start
SIU allowed Loyola to score just six points in the first quarter of its 62-46 win on Jan. 19. It marks the second-straight game in which Southern has held an opponent to six points in the opening period, and tied for the fewest points it has allowed in an opening quarter since the NCAA went to the four-quarter system prior to the 2015-16 season.
Kylie Giebelhausen continues to climb the school's all-time rankings in several notable categories:
• Giebelhausen made her 400th career field goal against Drake on Jan. 7 and became the 23rd Saluki to make at least 400 career field goals in a career. She is 14 field goals shy of passing Kelly Firth for 21st on SIU's all-time list.
• The East Peoria, Ill. native snagged five rebounds vs. Valparaiso and is one of 23 Salukis with 500-plus career rebounds. Her 512 career rebounds are the 22nd-most in program history and she needs 10 boards to move past Cathy Kampwerth for 21st.
• Giebelhausen had three steals against Loyola and now has 126 for her career, which is the 14th-most in program history. She can pass Jayme Sweere for 13th on SIU's all-time list with 12 steals.
• Giebelhausen's 1151 career points are the 18th-most in program history and she is 17 points shy of passing Kasia McClendon for 17th all-time. Her 1151 career points are the the third-most in the MVC and ranks 154th among active NCAA DI student-athletes.
• Giebelhausen's 3708 career minutes are third to Rishonda Napier (4,138 career minutes) and Cartaesha Macklin (4088) for third all-time. Giebelhausen's career average of 32.8 minutes per game is tied with Rishonda Napier's 32.8 minutes per game average for the best in program history.
• 53.8% of Giebelhausen's 414 career field goals have been three-pointers, which is the highest average amongst Salukis who have made at least 400 career field goals. Of players who have made at least 100 career three-pointers, Karrie Redeker's (1988-92) 62.6% career field goals being three-pointers is the highest. Jordyn Courier (2011-14) is second at 62.2%.
• Giebelhausen's 223 career three-pointers are the third-most in school history. She needs 13 more three-pointers to pass Teri Oliver for second.
Double-Doubles
Abby Brockmeyer recorded her fourth career double-double in the win at Bradley on Jan. 12 with 12 points and 13 rebounds. It is tied for the third-most double-doubles by a freshman in school history, as Alexus Patterson and Bridgett Bonds each tallied four during their respective freshman seasons.
