LAS VEGAS - Four Salukis scored in double figures to help Southern Illinois run away from the Hartford Hawks, 72-50 Friday inside South Point Arena.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Salukis (3-2), who led by as many as 27. Southern got out to a fast start and built a double-digit lead at the end of the first quarter when Payton McCallister drained a 40-footer at the buzzer to put SIU ahead 24-11.
Nicole Martin finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go along with five rebounds and a block. Abby Brockmeyer notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five assists. Makenzie Silvey added 11 points and career-best seven rebounds while Payton McCallister chipped in 11 points and five assists.
The Salukis were dominate on the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks, 44-to-27 and Southern's ball movement was superb, as the Salukis dished out 21 assists on 26 field goals. SIU had three players with 5-plus assists for the second time this season, led by Brittney Patrick's six assists.
"We just played better together," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I thought we shared the basketball well. When we were moving the ball, having good movement, making the right reads and finding the gaps in their zone press I thought we were really good. I thought our high-low game was very good. It was a total team win."
The Saluki defense set the tone early, as Southern shot 57.1% from the floor in the first half and limited Hartford to 28.6% from the floor, including just 20% from three-point range. SIU also forced 11 first half turnovers.
"Its everything," Brockmeyer said of SIU's fast start. "Its hard to come from behind like (against WKU). We almost came back but starting out slow never works out for us."
Southern's defense was particularly impressive against Hawks guard Sierra DeCosta, who came into the contest having scored at least 19 points in three-straight games and averaging 17.8 points per game. SIU held DeCosta to a season-low four points on 1-for-6 shooting.
While Southern's defense was dominating, SIU's offense was humming right along. SIU shot 49.1% (26-of-53) from the field, including a season-high 38.9% (7-of-18) from three-point range.
The Salukis led 38-19 at the half and took their largest lead, 51-24 on a pair of free throws by Martin with 3:39 to play in the third. The Hawks got to within 18, 59-41 with 4:59 remaining in regulation but that was as close as they could get.
The win marked the first for the Salukis in Las Vegas since 28 years ago to the day - Nov. 23, 1990 when SIU defeated San Francisco, 71-46. It also is the program's first-ever win over an American East Conference school.
Southern closes out play at the South Point Shootout tomorrow, Nov. 24 versus No. 19 Arizona State. Tip-off against the Sun Devils is set for 2:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. CT
