CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team led from start to finish in a 62-53 win over the Bradley Braves Sunday morning inside SIU Arena.
The Salukis (13-11, 8-5 MVC) snapped a three-game losing streak with their eighth-straight win over the Braves, as Southern improved to 9-1 against Bradley under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein.
"It's just nice to get back to the win column," Stein said. "Games like this you don't care how you (win) just as long as you get it done. I thought our execution was ten times better than it has been in the last three games. We had some different kids have to step up, be good leaders and get us going and we had that."
Southern led from wire-to-wire in the win, as the Salukis led 12-2 after the opening four minutes of play and 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.
"I think playing with urgency was the most important thing for us today," Makenzie Silvey said. "We knew if we played with urgency, intensity and we executed our sets that we would get easy shots and be able to knock them down."
Southern made 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range in the second quarter and turned the ball over just once in the frame to build a 34-21 lead at the half.
SIU took its largest lead, 54-37 on a 3-ball by Silvey with 7:38 to play in regulation. The Braves used a 14-3 run to get back to within six, 57-51 with 1:43 to play, but the Salukis knocked down their free throws late to seal the win.
"We've been in those situations a lot," Stein said of Bradley's late game comeback. "Unfortunately, we sometimes let people creep back in but sometimes its just their good play. Bradley has some very talented players that you can't give open threes and we allowed them to get some good looks by not closing traps and we let kids split us. Those are things that we will have to get better at."
Makenzie Silvey scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, which included 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Kylie Giebelhausen had 13 points, three assists and two steals while Nicole Martin had 12 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
The Salukis are back in action on Feb. 16 when they make their first trip to Valparaiso to take on the Crusaders. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
