
Salukis Trump Purple Aces on Senior Day

The Salukis sent their seniors out on a huge high note today by defeating Evansville's men's and women's swimming and diving teams by large margins.
The Salukis women defeated the Purple Aces 166 to 72 and the men won 157 to 79. Southern Illinois won all 26 events in the meet and its seniors earned five victories in their final home meet.
Southern's divers picked up after last week's dominance over Indiana State by winning all four events this week. In the women's portion of diving, sophomores Beibei and Baobao Ji both won events for the Salukis; Baobao took first in the one-meter dive with a score of 280.57. Beibei was second with a score of 176.15 and senior Rachel Williams was third with a score of 265.95.
In the three-meter dive, Beibei Ji was first with a score of 296.26 and Baobao was second with a score of 282.30. Williams was third again with a score of 272.18.
The Saluki women's divers made a big statement in the meet, Beibei, Baobao and Williams all outperformed Evansville's Courtney Coverdale, who was the Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Year in the 2016-17 season.
On the men's side, sophomore Eli Mercado picked up wins in both the one and three-meter dive. In the three-meter, Mercado finished with a score of 272.25 to edge out fellow Saluki sophomore Kai Hoffman-Dussome. Mercado won the one-meter dive by nearly 85 points over Evansville's senior Cory Barnes with a score of 315.00. Hoffman-Dussome was third in the event.
On the women's side of the meet, senior Bryn Handley celebrated her senior day with two victories and junior Emma Brazeau helped earn her seniors a meet win with two individual wins of her own.
For Handley, she took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:58.44. Junior Jordan Ries, senior Nicole Fuller was third and sophomore Juliana Carvalho was fourth. Handley also won in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.95 and her fellow senior Kelsie Walker was second with a time of 53.75.
Handley also helped her relay team of sophomore Rita Naude, senior Mikaela Montogomery and senior Chandler Ott to a victory in the 100-yard freestyle relay.
For Brazeau, she took home victories in the 100-yard IM and the 50-yard butterfly. In the 100-yard IM, Brazeau was followed by sophomores Sam Parsons, Laura Carver and junior Abby Kresal who were second, third and fourth respectively in the event.
Brazeau was also a part of a winning 100-yard medley relay team. Her team of senior McKenna Avery, junior Jessica Peck and freshman Abbie Young were first followed by the Saluki team of freshman Hannah Reiser, Kresal, junior Audrey Snyder and sophomore Maggie Burke.
Parsons, who was second in the 100-yard IM, earned a victory in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 30.60.
In the women's 25-yard freestyle, senior Mikaela Montgomery made her senior day just a little bit more special by earning a win in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 12.17. It was her first victory in any event in over a year. Ott, Avery and junior Rachel Hauer were second third and fourth respectively in the event.
Naude earned a win in the 50-yard backstroke to go along with her relay victory. Her time of 27.87 was nearly two-seconds faster than Evansville's sophomore Emma Hennessy, who was second.
Ries earned a victory in the 250-yard freestyle to go with her second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. She won the event with a time of 2:28.09 and was nearly 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, junior Madi Jones from Evansville.
For the men, a slew of Salukis earned multiple event wins in the meet.
Sophomore Tamas Hajtman continued to rack up the victories in the start of his Saluki career. He took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.18, which is the new second-best time for Southern this season. Senior Alex Crawford, sophomore Matt Ciezczak and senior Joao Facciotti were second, third and fourth in the event.
Hajtman also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.71, which is a new best for Southern this season. He is yet to lose an event this season. Hajtman helped his 200-yard freestyle relay team of Facciotti, senior Nolan Hillard and junior Reilly Garman to victory as well.
Garman earned two individual event wins of his own on the day. He took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.15. Senior Michael Wolfe was second, junior Nolan Fahey was third and sophomore Chris Phillips was fourth. Garman's time is a new best for Southern in the event this season. He was also first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.56.
Freshman Sam Drew earned two individual wins and a 400-yard medley relay win in the meet. His first individual win of the day came in the 200-yard IM with a score of 1:56.61. Junior Alex Martinez was second, sophomore Ryan Lehane was third and freshman Kyle Berquist was fourth.
Drew earned his second win of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.55. He was first by more than three seconds.
In the 400-yard medley relay Drew's team of Crawford, junior Alex Netzel and Ciezczak were first in the event and followed in second by Southern's relay team of sophomore Ryan Lehane, Berquist, senior Michael Connor and Phillips.
Wolfe earned a victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:37.86. Sophomore Chris Cole also logged a distance event win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:31.24. Senior Alex Crawford was first with a time of 51.86 in the 100-yard backstroke.
With the event against Evansville in the books, the Salukis have completed their regular season schedule and turn their focus towards the Conference Championship meets. The women will compete in the MVC Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 14 to the 17 in Iowa City, Iowa and the men head to Oxford, Ohio Feb. 28 to March 3 for the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
